I was thinking of getting that one, but the amazon reviews don't look so rosy. Has anyone actually bought one of these?

I bought one. I didn’t read any of the reviews, especially Amazon. Quite a few well known engine builders use them, and a little birdie also recommended it. Mine arrives tomorrow, so I’ll try it out this weekend.

Joel,

Yes, I did get it. Initially I thought I was receiving something from Kimber LOL!

I also received the vintage Sears light.

My middle of the day in/out of sunlight review:

Flaming River: Put a new set of batteries in it. Still have to find the right angle when shooting it. Almost impossible (for me) to see the light during the day in sunlight. Like I previously said, self-powered is cool. Pulled the car into the garage and was able to see the light better and it was fine after that.

Vintage Sears: I believe I’m the first to ever open the box. Like years ago, I hated fumbling with the extra long cable lines. Shooting the light was not good outside in the sunlight, but okay in the garage. It was kinda sketchy/irrational with 16v’s, but got it to settle down. It won’t be the light I use on this car.

MSD 8991: Self-powered, lightweight, easy to maneuver point n shoot, and the light is VERY BRIGHT no matter where you’re using it. The others above are no comparison. The only CON is the cost, but worth it to me due to wanting the brightest light. The Pro Shop discount helped.

Thanks for the review! I think I'll pull
the trigger on a MSD 8991 as well.

Looks like a Ferret Instruments but they went out of business at least 5 years ago. shruggy
Ferret made very bright and pricey timing lights. They were also sold under other brand names including MSD.
Maybe MSD bought that part of their business so they could continue selling them after Ferret went belly up.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I've had 2 of the chrome Craftsman lights in the past. Both worked fine but do not drop them. Both of mine stopped working after I dropped them only once. Maybe all timing lights are no good after being dopped. I don'tknow.

I burnt up several Sears chrome timing lights years ago with the early MSD race boxes like the 404B and 404C and maybe even one of those lights with a early MSD 7 and a MSD 7C box before they switch to the newer 7AL2 boxes.
I ended up buying two of the Penske brand Sears timing lights and they have not fail yet , so far luck
I also bought a Flaming river stand alone D cell battery powered light and it works okay as long as I can shade the balancer and timing tab so I can see the numbers on the balancer blush Fender cover works well over the top of the motor to make shade , usually scope

My Flaming River light lasted 2 years. I’ll never buy another one.

my problem with using any light, is the faint markings used on aftermarket SFI balancers.
the markings are just too hard for me to see with the engine on a stand in a well lit garage, let alone installed in the average engine bay.

I have my Dad's chrome Craftsman from the 70's and it works fine with my MSD boxes. It will give you a little tingle if you have any bare skin touching the car when you pull the trigger though.

I have two timing lights, the first is an older chrome sears light with no features , but always seems to work. The second I a fairly expensive snap on MT-2261A timing light I bought a few years back as it has a built in tachometer and can be dialed forward or back with a digital reading. The bad part with the snap on is on late it seems to work at intermediate times. It almost like it stops picking up as the tach will fall of and the flash slows down. For the money it cost it for sure should not give any issue. I wish I knew how or who to repair it as it has good features.

Was wondering if anyone would mention Snap-On. We have the EETL500 and it is wonderful. In the past had and OTC (worked well) and and after that died an older Snap-On (which eventually died and was traded in). This new model is great. Take yours to a local mechanic and have them give it to their Snap-On driver. Or you can call Snap-On directly. If its serviceable they can fix it. If its not the driver can take it in trade. Another option is Ebay. Just checked and EETL500 lights go pretty cheep when they are available.

Looking at the pictures on Ebay of MT-2261A it looks like that's the one we used to have and traded in on the newer model. So it's probably not going to be able to be reconditioned. Pretty sure we sent it in and ended up not being repairable.
