When the hawk hit my windshield a was in my 69 road runner, I never saw it until it hit the windshield. I don't know if it was trying to capture some prey on the side of the road or it saw its reflection. It didn't end well for him, luckily the windshield didn't break.

Many years ago I was driving down the highway on my way to a car club meeting, when a pheasant on the right side of the road decided it was time to take flight at the same time I was passing by. I was driving an 80s Chrysler 5th Ave (late 80s to give you a time frame), the pheasant took out the radio antenna and spread itself across the windshield. The way it sounded inside the car, I pictured the roof ripped open and I was sure with all the bird stuff on the glass, it was a goner. It was about dusk and the sun was setting, between the bird stuff and the sun, I was lucky to see well enough to make it to the next town where I had to stop and clean off the windshield so I could see through it. I was surprised it didn't even crack the glass, but the chrome trim around the windshield didn't fare any better then the antenna did. Good thing the car was a beater.
We had an early Chrysler mini van and we lived out in the country. There was always deer running around. One night a couple of deer ran into the side of the mini van while my teenage daughter was driving. One hit the passenger side and actually dented the door, and the second one she caught with the front of the van. That deer took out the grille and damaged the hood a little, but then it swung around and slid all the way down the driver side of the van. We had deer hair, deer poop, and deer blood down both sides and across the front of the mini van. The grille was busted up bad, and the hood was damaged just enough to make it hard to open the hood. That van was a pile of junk anyway, so a few months later it was replaced. We had a couple of vehicles that deer ran into the side of, but the mini van was the only one that got the door dented. We moved into town 20 years ago, so not much animal adventure since then. Gene

No wildlife into the windshield (yet), but a vulture took out the grill in my wagon. Stupid thing dove for some roadkill just as I was coming thru at about 50 MPH. For all the plastic and feathers that came over the hood, I thought for sure it had taken out the radiator, but the hood latch support stopped it. Friggin' thing took out everything between the headlights!
While I was PO'ed, the grill was already broken when I bought the wagon. I've got a few spares, so not that big of a deal.

Lots of birds, a couple pre-hit deer's, a few mice, squirrel, a little kid, a random watermelon, street cones and a mattress all had the unfortunate happening of coming in contact with my car while driving in the city. The kid was the only one to survive.

I once killed a wooden step ladder with a fast moving Doba. Bambie also failed to cross in front of my RC.
As far as birds: One day I'm headed home from a long day in the boneyard. A few miles down the road from my house is a seldom used speed trap that I usually try to slow down for. The old time painted lines on the street version because PA doesn't let the locals have radar guns. Got of the gas early, backed it down, spaced out for a minute and bam!, bird to the wind shield. Bounced, tumbled over the roof, scared the hell outta me. Quick check to make sure it wasn't flapping around in the bed because rear slider open and then just punch the loud peddle.
The problem was that I was about 100 yrds shy of the speed trap, driving my LRE and the trap was manned. Didn't even see the cop because still shaking off the bird strike and no clue how fast I blew by but it did take about a mile and a couple cornfield corners for him to catch me. Cop was straight up pissed and losing his mind, wrote me up for like 80 in a 35. I had a good story, so I took it to court. Judge knocked it down to something reasonable.

I was driving truck on a highway going under a bridge when I saw a blur flash across the windshield and then Bam! A pigeon got spooked and flew out from the girders of the overpass. All it did was leave a big layer of dust on the windshield. Then there was Bambi and suicide by truck. I was traveling west on the NYS thru way around the 340 mile marker, not making it up! It was just past dusk so fully dark, no other cars around then all of a sudden there was Bambi, standing cross wise and looking the other way, in the center of my lane. I chose not to try swerving around it so as not to take a chance of loosing control. So then BAM, I felt the impact and running over the poor thing. I stopped to check and just found a slightly damaged grill piece that had some fur stuck in it, and them just traces of blood inside the wheels of the tractor and trailer I was wondering how I would clean that out before making a delivery to a school in the morning.. It was taken care of by it raining on the 2 hr .drive to the school, Cleaned it right up.

Funniest story I have was a piece of cardboard. I was only a few miles from home in my 96 Ram pickup & driving on a divided type road - 2 lanes east, 2 lanes west. Anyway, it was in the summertime & a big storm was brewing - it was starting to get windy & dark from the heavy clouds coming in. There was a couple guys next to me in a pickup - they were a little behind me, so they saw the whole thing. Up ahead of me is a big sheet of cardboard blowing around the road & as I'm approaching it, it blows up into the air. I'm thinking great - I'll go right under it! Next thing I know, someone turns out the lights - the cardboard came down & covered the entire windshield - it was as if my hood blew open - I couldn't see anything & I was doing probably 60! So I stabbed the brakes & after a few seconds, the cardboard was gone. The guys next to me in the pickup were hysterical with laughter. I know they are probably still telling that story today & laughing. What were the odds?

I've got a funny deer story going back to when I was in HS. I had borrowed my Dad's pickup ('75? chevy 3/4 ton 4X4) so that I could take my friend to get some parts for his car. By the time we headed back, it was dark out. The route we had taken took us past a place where a (retired) guy would restore cars just to sell them. When he finished a car, he would showcase it outside for a few days in plain view of the road. This particular evening, he had a beautiful '55 Chevy sitting outside. As we were driving past, I said; "wow! check out that '55". In almost the same exact tone I had said that, my friend said; "wow! check out that deer". DEER?! Caught that sucker with the right front corner, spun it around into the passenger door, caving the door in to the point the window wouldn't roll down. Of course the deer ran off....... I thought my Dad was gonna be PO'ed but he actually took it quite well (the truck was kinda beat already). The next morning, he told me to walk out to the truck with him, as we're walking he starts to chuckle. "Looks like you hit a pretty good size deer last night" and he points to the door. What we didn't see in the dark was a perfect outline and indent of the deer's butt on the door. You could see both hind quarters as well as the tail, but no splash........ While he wasn't upset about it, he never let me live it down either.

I had a wild turkey glance off the windshield. He kept flying and I kept driving so I guess no animals were injured in this story.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I've killed a couple grocery carts in my day, luckily they didn't hit the windshield. My first wife did hurl her kids 20" bike at my windshield one day as I was hurriedly backing out of the driveway bounced off and didn't break it.

Driving to school in my buddies 1979 Ford Grenada and saw a bird swoop down in front of the car. Never thought anything else of it for a couple days. Turns out it was stuck headfirst in the grill.

One of my students came to class and said I'm sorry I missed class last week. I hit another deer. She said she hit 5 in the last 3 years with the same car. Guy in the back of the class said. "Hey let's go hunting, you can drive."

Craziest thing I had happen was smacking a cat. I'm driving a 97 T-Bird on a major city street, 3 lanes in each direction. A park is on my right, and houses on the other side of the street. At the last second I see a cat come from the park and heading straight for a collision course with me. Never saw a cat move so fast in my life. He was running in leaps and bounds, a good 10 feet per leap. It was too late and too dangerous in traffic for me to lock up the brakes. As I was carefully braking, I hit him with the sloped leading edge of the hood. By now myself and other traffic was stopped. I watched him launch straight up 15 feet in the air and crash land lifeless next to my driver's door. Sorry cat, but I need to move on. As I'm ready to leave, the cat comes to life, and continues leaping across the street into the oncoming lanes, although he was a bit dazed. He ran smack into the driver's door of a stopped car, and slid down the door, just like in the cartoons. Well I figured that did him in. Nope, 30 seconds later, he's back up, and a bit more dazed, but still moving at a pretty good clip. Runs around the car he just hit, and promptly gets run over by another car headed in the same direction,. All I saw was a wadded up ball of cat fur as he tumbled out from under the rear of that car. Surely that did him in. NOPE! Another 30 seconds or so and saw him get up, even more dazed and injured, and the last I saw of him he was running between the houses on the other side of the street. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own two eyes. I pulled over later and inspected my hood. There were 5 vertical parallel dents. I figured shoulder blade, 3 ribs, and a hip. Craziest thing I've ever witnessed. Wish I had a video! I figure he used about 4 of his nine lives that day.

I've hit so many things, mostly at night. It's sad that people don't contain their dogs and really their cats too. In this county the leash laws apply to cats just the same as dogs, but cat owners seem to think their cats are allowed to run loose everywhere. Thank God I've never hit a person, but have seen plenty that have been hit. Most we're intoxicated. The ones that weren't were usually kids who believe they can be seen by drivers. Last one was sitting on skateboard paddling across state roadway at night. Another sad ending to a young life. I guess I threw a real bummer in here. Never forget the time I was driving, and had my arm on the open window, and a bird pooped right on my forearm. Some kind of seabird because man that stunk like rotten fish!!! Splattered some on the inside of door too.
