I'm trying to loosen the front crank (damper) bolt, but with the engine and tranny still in the car (actually truck) the engine just spins when I turn the breaker bar, which of course will happen. I know there is a tool for this (bolts to the center of the damper), but I can't afford it right now and have no shop to make one. Someone told me to stuff one of the cylinders with rope to lock the engine, but I'm a bit skeptic about that. What have you folks tried? Thanks!
You dont have an impact? This will work: position a breaker bar against the drivers side of the k-frame....hold it steady and firm, while an assitant bumps the starter. Yes its scary. Yes it works. Done it. Remove the fan first!

A buddy of mine used cloths line once I think (I have an impact, so only heard from friends who did it..) Just leave the rope hanging out a foot or two so you don't lose it down the cylinder (thinking back...another friend used nylon rope from memory.. )

Don't need to think too much into it, as long as the rope is small enough to fit in the hole and strong enough no to break when you pull it out.

Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first.
Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

I'm guessing that this has an auto trans so pull the front dust shield on the trans and get a friend to stop the flex plate with the pry bar or if you can't get help jam the pry bar in there to stop the crank.
Pry bar beteen block, and the teeth on the converter, or on the head of a converter bolt. Should work.
In all hoesty, I always use an impact wrench.

I usually wedge in a peice of oak or other hard wood for the flyweel, or converter teeth to sink into, this way I don't bust teeth or a casting with a pry bar

Make sure to use jack stands and have a jack underneath to catch the car if the car falls off. One time in band camp… Well as a kid my friends and I had a hard time once and while attempting to pull loose a bolt, we inadvertently pulled the car off the jack stand! Luckily the jack caught the car and no one got hurt.

Why not just use the damper holding tool that lots of people sell? I'm always amazed when this topic comes up and nobody seems to even know about the tool. Mancini Racing has it as MRE712330.
That would require spending money , I don't think it's an option
