Tom Bailey's Sick 2.0 Drag week car that ran 5.99 in 2019 runs a GV, at one point in time it was said to have two of them but I don't know if it still does. I am sure he is not shifting it under power though.

I am sure he is not shifting it under power though. A GV is a sun/planet gear setup with a cone shaped clutch and a piston pump for engagement. I see no reason why it can’t be engaged under power. I did it all the time. The gears are always engaged all you are doing is apply the clutch. It’s a 1 to 1 ratio until the clutch is engaged. Also if my memory is right I believe the gears are straight cut. It’s been a number of years since I had a GV apart . Here is an article that explains hot it works https://www.gearvendors.com/hodrod-may00.html

The actual GV ratio is rounded off to .78:1 but is actually =1/(1+(22/77)) or .77778:1. GV also allows creating 2 intermediate gears by engaging it in 1st or 2nd. For a 727 this makes: 1st 2.45:1 1st + GV 1.91:1 2nd 1.45:1 2nd + GV 1.13:1 3rd 1.00:1 OD .778:1 I had GearVendors in each of my Diesel duallys. I never found a use for splitting gears in either truck, one auto, one six speed, only used it as 2nd overdrive. I put an A500 in my '82 Ramcharger w/ 4.10 gears, liked it alot.

With either option, what are the fitment issue's with TTI headers and small block 500 and 518 or Gear Vendors? In an E body?

with the a500 or 518 you can't run OEM console shifter linkage (the girth gets in the way of the down rod). I solved that by using a B&M cable kit driven by the OEM shifter in my fury. We had a GV in a crew duallie, we never gear split either, the 440 had TQ enough to never need it. We didn't pull huge loads but never really needed to shift out of OD up hills either.
Both my fury and Charger have .68 OD's (fury auto 3.91's, charger stick 4.10's) and the big OD drop is really nice for going 80mph down the freeway. The fury is stock cammed and turbos, so the OD kicking in around town isn't too bad, but the Charger has a 484 purple in it and I don't go to OD until 3000+ rpm or it's just a loping mess (and poor mpg).
When my fury was naturally aspirated it had B body headers on the 383 and they fit around the a500 with no issues at all.

So its my understanding gear splitting only works correctly/well if the OD is not too deep, hence the comments above about GV not offering a lot of OD. Case of, "can't have your cake and eat it too".

I drove around my buddy Mike Musto's B-Body with a 727 & Gear Vendors for a weekend. It was just too litlle of a good thing with that .78 to 1 OD. I wouldn't bother for that little of an improvement.
Then again I run an Extreme Automatics Stage 2 2004R with a 3800 rpm lock-up converter from Precision of New Hampton behind my 408 Magnum. It's the best performing transmission I've ever driven and has a 2.76 to 1 first gear and a .67 OD. Locking up the converter makes it seem like a 5 speed by dropping about 350 rpm in 4th. I painted it black and put a Mopar sticker on it for the purists.
Although if you have over 1000hp & 850tq, you would have to upgrade to a Stage 3 version.

The car I mentioned above has 4000HP is the only reason I said that

[quote=furious70]with the a500 or 518 you can't run OEM console shifter linkage (the girth gets in the way of the down rod). That's not true. I have the stock rod in my Cuda. It took a little modding of course, but nothing too major. It works fine and that is with a FMVB, so it gets the full work-out. And the 2 1/4 TTIs clear the 518 okay. They are close, but clear. Here is a pic of an early mock-up:

I don't guess that I do. I looked for a better pic than the one I posted, but they all had the headers in the way.
I ground a groove in the 518 case to help with the vertical shaft angle. The tricky part for me was fabbing up the arm that goes from the vertical shaft to the shift lever on the tranny. It had to kinda wind around a bit to clear everything. There is a lot going on in a small space. But it works good. No problems in the 4 or 5 years that I have had it together.
