Years back I had a squirrel or two take up residence in my shop's mezzanine/drop ceiling.
All they chewed was cardboard, to get into boxes, where they made nests of fiberglass insulation.
Never chewed wiring, hoses, or anything else.

I ended up using an animal cage-trap & peanut butter, and driving a few miles away to another part of the woods.

My neighbor had an issue with chipmunks making a nest in the flue of his gas fireplace.
Instead of sealing them out his wife wanted them relocated.
All summer long I would see him driving away and driving back 20 minutes later.

The funny thing he mentioned was one trip a squirrel was reluctant to leave the trap. He nudged it out where it proceeded
to hide on top of his tire.
He chased it out and bam a hawk swooped down and carried it away.
I find it rather comical as I have a large hickory tree and he has a medium sized one. The squirrels and chipmunks come from blocks away to feed.
During peak nut season the hawks take up temporary residence around our lots. We find piles of fur and headless rabbits throughout the fall.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

In my experience, repellants are a waste of money. You need to get rid of any food, water or shelter source that brings them in. Traps and poisons can be had but the poisons will affect other critters, like your pets, as the target rodent doesn't always croak in its nest/hole. Regardless of what the bait manufactures say about the bait blocks being pet friendly, the pet can die too or at a minimum get seriously jacked up. Any varmint that I could hit that fell into the effective range on the .177 got hit. Keep them slain for a good distance around your house and you won't have very many issues.

I've got the Gamo Silent Stalker .22 cal. Plenty quiet, gets the job done.

here is what my "little red squirrel buddy" donated to my charger a few years ago when it was in storage. he chewed through a stainless steel window screen to get in.
he then chewed through the rubber gasket around the filler neck, went under the back seat, then found a "nice" storage area.
luckily, he didn't eat the seat covers or headliner, but he did eat the carpet and some seat foam.
he was rewarded with finding himself in a live trap [jail] then a nice little .22short. did i mention i HATE red squirrels ? flame
anyway, no more open garage windows, even with stainless screen.
