I've been thinking about getting a metal detector. I've never had one before and don't know much about them. I don't want to spend a lot for one initially as I would like to see if it's something I will really enjoy or not first (although I'm sure the better detector you get the more enjoyable it will be). I would appreciate any recommendations on an inexpensive but decent detector for a beginner if anyone here has any knowledge of them.

It is my favorite non Mopar hobby! Lots of fresh air and exercise. I have hunted since the late 70s. My machines are a Minelab Equinox 600 and a Minelab Explorer SE. If you buy a cheap machine you will get discouraged fast. Don't expect to go to the local park and start pulling up silver coins one after another. Research and knowing your detector are the two biggest keys to success.

I live on the East Coast so I mostly hunt in the water.
Minelab is my choice for this.
They also make very good land machines. Don't cheap out you will be discouraged quickly

I'm sure the other folks here are 100% correct about getting a good unit but I had the same idea you had and went the cheap route to see if I would like it. There is a Hobby Lobby store here localy and they supply 40% off one item coupons monthly. I took one of those and went over and picked up a Tracker IV by Bounty Hunter. With the coupon it was less than $60. I've gone out 5-8 times since then and I've found cheap rings, necklaces and a lot of newer coins. It maybe an option if you just want to try it out first.

I do have fun when I go out but I rarely go, and I don't hit the best spots with a lot of foot traffic because I'm always worried that I'll get beat up in the parking lot (joking, kind of hop).

What you describe is just what I had in mind for now but I checked the HL website and although it has the 40% offer, it says it doesn't apply to the Tracker.

Bummer... I bought mine about two or three years ago. They must have changed their policy or I got away with it...

I picked up a lightly used Garrett AT Max off CL last year.
A friend has some farm land with four 1800's home sites that we gave a try last year.
So far just old junk, still waiting for our first old coins.
