The warmer-than-air water melts the underside a little faster, and it gets top-heavy. I am not sure its the temp difference between the water and the air that makes for the most melting, so much as the thermal conductivity of a liquid is far greater then air that increases the lower melting and change of COG..
Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Wow! Those guys were lucky!
They could have easily been crushed/drowned/frozen or any combination of the three. I can't imagine that swimming in sub-zero waters with no life jacket and climbing boots/crampons strapped to your feet is very easy--even for the minute or two that it took the boat to come back...
