What does a setup like that wiegh? Our trucks at work are 08 Peterbuilt 335s with the 8.3L Cummins that are 240HP with 6 speed allisons. At 34,000lbs they will go 85 mph on flat ground and hold speed well in hills but work hard on steep climbs and slow down.

That bieng said I would think 230HP would be OK as I would guess that to weigh less than 34k but the aero would suck. We also have a box truck with a 230HP Cat(Run don't walk from this motor it sucks) Its a 28 foot box thats 13ft tall and it will run 75 loaded at 33K just fine. Its geared crappy so the hills destroy it though.

I have an older 30ft 454 MH that I pull my 20ft trailer with. It pulls great the only 2 drawbacks are gas mileage and driving in windy conditions. Drives straight as an arrow with no wind. It's very flat here also. I've done a little work on it and am hoping for better mileage.

Horsepower shouldn't be the issue here. He's not drag racing the darn thing, he's towing with it. That said, how much TORQUE does this thing make?

My parents have the same engine in their 31' motorhome. They hooked up there aluminum 22' enclosed trailer behind it and it would pull ok on flat roads. Try and pull any type of hills and their screwed. The damn thing overheats! Diesel techs can't find anything wrong with it. Bottom line, that engine doesn't have enought power to pull that load. It works well for moving the coach by itself however, add the enclosed trailer, its a hurtin unit. After talking with some fellow racers, they decided to purchased a different one. It was recommended a minimun of 300HP for what he was doing. They ended up getting a used 330HP cat in a 33' coach. Guess what... no more problems!

Gearhead, I would say something was seriously wrong with that rig. I have the 230hp cummins in my 34' pusher and have had no issues climbing hills. There are some pretty steep ones on the way to PRP from here.

I never pulled my car to Bristol but I did take the Jr in the same trailer and yes, it's much lighter than my car but now were talking mountians and like I said before, I wasn't the fastest one going up but I wasn't trying to be.

My parents looked at a 300hp DP that had a 4 spd trans, I drove it and was truley disapointed. It felt like it wouldn't get out of it's own way.

Where is your radiator located? Is it facing rearward or facing out the side of the coach?

Mine is at the rear.

The one my parents looked at that I mentioned was on the side. They ended up buying a 95 Itasca version of my 94 Winnie and love it.

Ok. So if I stay above 300HP I'll be OK?
Not even sure I want to do this yet. I really love my pickup. I'm always trying to scheme ways to have my cake and eat it too. My wife hates it.

You could buy a trailer with living 1/4's for the amount you would spend on the motorhome,
keep the pickup
SELL your old enclosed and be wayyyyyyyy ahead
then yoyu only insure two things

I know. That's what I really wanted to begin with. My trailer is only worth about 7K to sell. The cheapest (decent) living quarters I have found are about 19-20K, used. I would still have to borrow 12-13K to make the swap. I still owe 21K on my truck. I can't swing another $300 a month trailer payment on top of my $600 a month truck payment. Especially, when the wife needs a newer minivan soon. Trust me, I'd rather buy a LQ trailer instead of a Caravan, but life has it's priorities. Sucks huh.

I was going to suggest a badass trailer as well but sounds like that is out the window.

You might find a cheap ones these days though.
