They made it to orbit. 19 hours until they dock with the ISS.

First stage successfully landed on the droneship in the Atlantic.

Or just another photo op while standing on the roof of the tallest building around for miles just after a passing lightning storm spending a majority of one' time with your back to the launch pad and turning promptly away after launch even before the successful rocket launch reaches the altitude of the the Challenger explosion. Did I mention Florida is the lightning Capital of the US?

Yup, we are back in the saddle. up

Several weeks ago I finished up a set of heads at 10:30pm. My son and a buddy were sipping a few so I mixed up a vodka and Mountain Dew. One and a half quarts of apple pie moonshine, a bottle of fireball, and a few more mixed drinks the sun came up. I took three naps that day and my 31 year old son still wasn’t out of bed. Nights like this are fun and I enjoy one about once a year but it’s also where the saying never again comes from. But yes I enjoy a nap almost every day.

It's good to have an administration who knows what NASA is...and what it isn't!

I watched it live, and to be honest, a three-stage rocket with capsule at the top brought back memories of my youth and watching the Apollo program launchings with my family.

Honest question - so, the right screen was showing the first stage returning to the droneship. It was still well above the clouds, then started turning sideways a bit..... then the live feed went blank, a 'technical issues' screen came up, and then returned 'live' five seconds later and showing the booster already landed on drone. How does it go from way above the clouds to a perfect landing in five seconds?

Was wondering the same thing, the conspiracy types are going to have a hey-day with that. Same with the 19 hours to get to the ISS, they say it doesn't take that long (minutes to get home) its because they are stopping at all the secret space stations first etc lol

Why it takes 19 hours to get to the ISS:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNXPtZDS-cg

There is a quicker 5ish hour route, but they want to do a lot of tests of the capsule on this launch before they get there.

Must have been low lying clouds near the landing zone. They've landed... 50+?, so it's hardly a conspiracy that they can land them.

I was looking forward to that landing...
I know they have done it before, but I've never actually seen it.
So I kept my eye on it right up until the bank screen, then bam... its landed... WTH? work
Backed up the DVR... figured I missed something...
Nope, it went from in the clouds to platform in less time than it took me to pick up my remote.

Oh well... another of life's little mysteries....

The drone ship uses a satellite link to send footage back. The turbulence from the exhaust rocks it enough that it loses it's connection. It dies on pretty much every drone ship landing.

... and why am I not surprised... someone has made an entire video about this laugh2

Here's a land-landing with pretty good footage. https://youtu.be/SlgrxVuP5jk?t=1255

Ok I watched both and the 2nd one was pretty cool...

But it doesn't explain what we all saw today... Getting from cloud level to siting on the platform in about 10sec.
In the video you provided it took 2 1/2 min to land, after the 1st time it re-fired the rocket to slow it down
And a full 40seconds to land after re-firing the rocket the 2nd & final time...
No matter how you look at it, that's a heck of a lot longer than today's 5-10sec signal lost message.

Now I wish I would have hit "record". laugh2

That, along with individuals like Musk with the vision and talent to make it happen, only sad point to our space program is how much farther along and developed it could have been over the last few decades hadn't we been too preoccupied wasting trillions on useless wars and invasions on all fronts, hopefully future administrations see the need to continue rather than mothball

I disagree, I think our government waste way to much tax payers money on space. If it was up to me I would let private company like Space X develop business opportunities in outer space.
Humans can't live in outer space and prosper or on the Moon or Mars, why are we wasting our resources, exotic metals and fuel and money on doing this? work
I think our country should only spend money in space on national defense up work

NASA gets about 0.5% of the Annual Federal Budget.

The international space station has been continuously inhabited since November 2, 2000.

"Space Exploration Technologies Corp., trading as SpaceX, is a private American aerospace manufacturer and space transportation services company headquartered in Hawthorne, California. It was founded in 2002 by Elon Musk with the goal of reducing space transportation costs to enable the colonization of Mars. SpaceX has developed several launch vehicles and the Dragon spacecraft.

SpaceX's achievements include the first privately funded liquid-propellant rocket to reach orbit (Falcon 1 in 2008),the first private company to successfully launch, orbit, and recover a spacecraft (Dragon in 2010), the first private company to send a spacecraft to the International Space Station (Dragon in 2012), the first propulsive landing for an orbital rocket (Falcon 9 in 2015), the first reuse of an orbital rocket (Falcon 9 in 2017), the first private company to launch an object into orbit around the Sun (Falcon Heavy's payload of a Tesla Roadster in 2018), and the first private company to send astronauts to the International Space Station (Dragon 2 in 2020)" Wiki
