If you are over powering the compound the 05s will get a grainy look like its peeling the tread off of them.
Had them on my dragster, didnt work....Had them on door cars a few times, didnt work.....
Most of the time the 07s are the best choice IMO.....

I don't think there's anything wrong with a dead hook for us, I think it's just the super fast cars that need to be up on the tire. Rick what's the tread width on that Hoosier? I've been looking at tires. Bondo loves the QTP but they only show a 27" tall tire with a 10.5 tread. My M/T has a 10.5 tread, the Phoenix PH374 has a 10.8 tread, the Hoosier 18192 has an 11.10 tread . I just wonder if some of these new true 10.5 classes will allow the bigger tread widths even though they say 10.5 on the sidewall.

This is almost the exact same size as the mickey that we run right now Bob.
You need to go to a 12" rim..That will help a ton..

Thanks for the info Poppa J I been thinking the same thing. I do have three piece wheels and I could send them back and get the rear shells that are 2" wider. I just cant believe that not one person has tried or has experiece with a soft compound slick

Rick, I haven't run a soft compound, but I have heard they are great in spring/fall, but on the hot summer day races (sun), they spin if you have the power.
When I went from 12" wide rims to 14" wide rims (13.6" tread slicks), it was the best thing I ever did for hook and tire life. It allowed me to run more air pressure and it wore the tire more evenly, so it must have been more even contact. So, the idea of you going from 10" to 12" (or even 11" if they make it), has merit.

I don't see why you would want to dead hook, wheel speed is very important, just some combinations benefit from more than others. It's not something you'll see with the naked eye in most cases, hence why data loggers are equipped to measure it. There was quite a decent discussion about this in a post a month or so back, it might be worth searching for, I just wish I could remember what the post was about originally. AL...

Real soft compound slicks are usually for very light cars like altereds or front engined rails. We like the Hoosier radial 10.5x30 slicks, they are a softer compound but you run 20-22 lbs. of pressure in them. They go away in 60-70 passes. I would bet with the wider rims and some suspension adjusting your car would respond like you would not believe. You want the tires to spin a half revolution on the launch. John and Ben Holt would be the ones to talk to about this..You are going to their T&T on the 11th right???

Even with controlled tire spin you can still have constancy... but it has to be controlled tire spin and checking the tire pressure each round is a must. I dont use the "soft" compounds and get a good 60'

You never ever ever want a dead hook!!!!
Take video of cars with the white stripe painted on the tire. Or if you know someone deadly consistant that you feel is doing everything right paint the stripe on their tire, if they will let you, and video their car leaving. If you go to slow motion, when watching the video, you will see the tire is not dead hooking.
On the rare occassion a car dead hooks, unless the converter is way loose then it bogs the converter, it bogs the motor. With a Data recorder you can see this in driveshaft and engine speed data. Sure you don't need the tire speed of a large tire tube chassis car, but you do need to spin the tire enough to force it to flatten the contact patch of the tire out to the racing surface. If you try and dead hook a tire there are several results that may happen depending on the size tire and how much power and weight you have.
One compress the tire so much the center of the tread lifts off the racing surface. If it stays compresses you are draging off performance running on a flat tire. If it spins the tire and gets on the tire you are not dead hooking.
Two run so much pressure you are already up on top of the tire. Either you dead hook it bogs the motor or the converter or it spins because the contact patch it too small. When you spin is the cituation it just keeps on spinning because the tire balloons and you run on a smaller patch wearing out the center of your tread.
Idealy paint a stripe and video the car. You want to spin the tire just enough so that white stripe never turns into a blur leaving the starting line. If the tire spins too fast the white stripe because impossible to follow. You want to see a very quick half to two full rotations of the slick, depending on the car, at the release of the brake. Then watch the stripe as the slick is now hooked up until the car is going to fast to see it.
As far as a car suddenly standing up that usually doesn't. This comes from dead hooking. What happens is the engine bogs loosing the power necessary to spin tire accellerating the car and the car just stands up. The tell tale of this is the the car falls out of the wheelstand quicker.

I switched from MT slicks to Goodyear soft compund tires. They are a stiff sidewall, D4B compound.(10.5 X 30) The car went from spinning hard,to eating oil pans! I need to find a compromise, get it up on the tire, and just black track a little. Have fun!
