I have a 77 440 block out of a truck and was wondering if anyone with experience putting these kits together can tell me the best way to figure out where to clearance the block? This is my first motor build so sorry if it seems stupid.

Depends on your stroke. If your goin up too say 500 cubes using a 4.15 crank? The onlt thing you need to clearance is the metal around where the oil pickup tube screws in! Thats the only place I had to clearance my 500.Because one of the rods will hit. I was told to grind .100 off of it. And never had a problem!

Start at the pickup tube spot and clearance at least .200 off and see if that works. But do it before you assemble it. Cuz there's gna be alot of shavings to clean up! after that. Assemble it and rotate it and check for more spots that hit! Good luck. Sounds like a sweet engine build! There's no excuse for cubic inches!

Off the top or the sides of it?

What you need to do is this: Clean the block, crank, rods, bearings and pistons. Assemble the crank and main bearings into the block. Assemble a pair of rods, pistons and bearings onto a throw of the crank. Slowly rotate the assembly and check clearances. Mark any areas that are too close or hit. If it does hit, rotate back around and mark the other side. Repeat for each pair of pistons. Remove all components. Grind block for clearance. Pay attention to areas that may have air, water or oil behind them. Do not leave any burrs or sharp edges on the bottom of the cylinders. Repeat the check, making sure the parts clear. You can also check deck height, true TDC, thrust and if you have a bellhousing, the alignment. Clean again, and get ready to assemble.

I have a 73 440 truck block and the 512 440Source stroker crank , which is 505 cubes @ .30 over . My machine shop only had to take a little off the block where the oil pickup screws into the block . I had to scrape the thrust bearing for clearance on mine also . Good Luck Donnie

Thanks for all the advice, like I said this is my first motor build and the clearence issue had me a little worried. One more question. when I put the bearings and crank in to check for clearance do I need to pull the bearings back out before I grind and clean it out?

I would. I don't like the idea of grinding dust and possible molten grinking sparks contaminating the bearings...
To take them out, I grab a large flat-bladded screwdriver, align the broad flat side of the blade with the edge of the bearing opposite the tang and carefully press. If this is not the right way, I'm sure someone will be here to slap me...

You should not be using metal anything on the bearing shells. Not the surfaces, not the parting lines. If you take your hand, place your thumb on one side of the main bearing housing next to the oil passage and your other fingers on the opposite side, then using your thumb, put sideways pressure on the bearing shell. It will rotate right out with very little pressure.
Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

mock up assembly is by far the best, most reliable way. assemble the short block without rings, and measure directly. this is also a good opportunity to check deck height and a variety of other clearances/ measurements.
for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?

This is the beast way to go about it. I had to grind at the bottom of the bores a small amount And the ½ inch oil pickup needed some finessing, other then that the rest was just checking the basics. Good luck with your build.

Good to check to make sure it spins freely too.

Yes you need to take it back apart to grind & clean... I wouldn't grind anything till you trial fit things, my 512 required zero grinding everything clears with .075 to spare...You sure don't have to cut .200 anywhere...
My stroker had one spot to grind and the shop. Went to .060 and in 5 years it's been just fine. The shop said .060 clearance plus, but .075 doesn't hurt also. 2/10's is a little much. Get out the little round feeler gauge and check.
Just to be clear yes .060 is a good safe clearance spec, my block had .075 without grinding anything..

Did anyone else have issues with the rods on the pins not moving? ust wondering if I was the lucky one to not get an "easy to put together stroker kit".

No, I always pay the shop to correct the rod big ends and hone the small ends properly. Emery cloth as the manufacturer suggests isnt good enough, and from the factory they are too tight.
