Outlook is not so wonderful that you have to have it... so not being able to use it is not necessarily a bad thing!
And stay away from bug-ridden Windows Live Mail.

Try Thunderbird, which Linux Mint comes with. I used it some time ago on an older Apple PowerPC laptop and it was quite easy to use...
