I need some header advice. I sold my Magnum Force front suspension and bought a new HDK kit with power steering, Well now my beautiful 2" custom made stainless headers with merge collectors don't fit. I had concerns that the oil pan would need modified but it fit perfect, never dreamed the headers would hit the lower control arms on the HDK.
'70 Challenger, HDK k-member and coilovers, and Indy Legend 426-1 heads, rack and pinion power steering, manual disc brakes and Tremec 5-speed. What headers would you guys recommend? This is a street only car. I have a mini starter and I prefer it to not be trapped. With my current headers it can drop right out the bottom.
My fabricator friend that built my stainless headers recommended buying new headers vs cutting mine apart and rebuilding 4 tubes.
Do the Legend heads require different headers than regular Hemi heads? I noticed TTI lists the Legend headers separately.
The arrows show the tube that is right where the lower control arms need to go.

You'd have to see them on the car, everything fits just tight enough that it'd be quite a task to re-do them. The fab guy said he'd end up moving 4 tubes around to swap the way they enter the collector. He actually laid under the car and mapped it all out. One of those tubes, 3 or 5, is right in the way of the steering column to rack joint. If all else fails, I can have the car towed to his shop so he can do the job the right way but it won't be cheap and I'd probably rather just buy the correct headers for this combo if they're available.

DoubleD, what do you think about the TTI options? There's 3, I'm looking at #4261-214. They're for an E-body with Legend heads. But it would suck to buy them and not fit, especially since Summit doesn't carry TTI. Compuflow is a distributor for TTI though.

Kenny Cooper at BigDogFab, he built the headers. He can definitely modify them if I take the car to his shop, still an option.
Later today I'll add a photo here of my K-member. There's only one place the headers would hit, the rear part of the lower control arm fasteners. I think the steering column area would be ok.

Here's a pic of the K-member. The 2 brackets sticking out of the front of it are for the sway bar. The headers are close to the mounting hole for the lower control arms so the arms won't even go on at all.
I talked to Sam at TTI, he actually suggested the 62-65 B-body Hemi headers(#625-218), he said those fit best with the power rack steering. I'm gonna buy them in raw form , that way if they don't fit I can return them. He said if I buy them coated they'll get scratched up with the fitting and shipping. I'll remove my K-member so the headers won't get beat up during fitment. If they fit I'll take them to get ceramic coated.

No he's definitely cheaper than a new set of headers so it's still an option, just weighing all options. I can sell these for good money if I buy new headers. If I have mine re-done it'll be a process, gotta tow the car there on a nice day with all the new suspension and steering on and have him do it, then towed back home cuz of the salty roads. Might be worth it though, I just like to avoid extra headaches 😁.

Good info, with your mention of the starter and the ceramic coating price it would probably be best to modify my headers. I wasn't too worried about mating to the exhaust system but that can be a pain at times too. I can have my starter out in about 15 min, I hope it's still that way after modifying.

You have a combination probably unlike anybody else has. Rather than buying shelf headers that may or more likely may not fit, i would have the fabricator redo what you have. By far the best option, and you will be doing it once.... and doing it right

Wonder how much lighter that setup is in comparison to some old school DIY mods....... With the engine set back a few inches 2 tubes near the steering box needed to be modified,then sent the headers to http://www.centralctcoatings.com/ for a recoat.
HEMI-ITIS has no cure. My condition is fully BLOWN!!

Is moving the engine back even a remote consideration?
Kevin It has a motor plate and mid plate(street car overkill) so it would be a ton of work and paint to move it back. Good idea though.

Hemi-itis, I'm not positive on the weight loss amount but I'm sure it's lighter than the factory parts. The best part about it is eliminating the torsion bars, but the coilover systems don't always have as much suspension travel as the torsion bar setup.

Gus, it has definitely snow-balled into a small mess, wasn't expecting header problems at all. I'm gonna test fit the raw TTI headers, if they fit I'll have them ceramic coated at New Image Coatings inside and out. If they don't fit they said they'll let me return them if they're in perfect shape and I'll have to pay the shipping of course. And I'm gonna keep the stainless headers for awhile just in case I end up wanting them back on the car.
The MF frontend wasn't awful but not good enough for what I want to do, I drive this car a lot and I may end up doing some autocross type events. So I wanted a known good front end and I wanted power steering and bigger brakes so I'm changing everything. Already sold the entire MF front end with Aldan coilovers and Wilwood brakes. I'll have bigger brakes now with 6 piston calipers, power steering, and the steering column will be setup better with a Flaming river shock absorber type joint on the rack. Should drive pretty awesome when done.
