Thanks for all the great feedback on this. Looks like the order of business here might be:

1) To make sure the mounts are not the issue, get a set of the correct Schumachers to ensure the motor change adaptation. These should get the motor to the proper height at least and even get it halfway straight, if that is possible. As was said earlier, it may make the interference to the steering shaft even worse.

2) If #1 doesn't work out totally, get a set of HP manifolds for the 440.
