How many rpms were you running at the time you hit it... MOST times when a sprag gives out is when you get off the pedal then hit it again.. I blew a rear end in the race car but it didnt hurt the sprag.. I pulled the trans for a check but it was fine.. the getting back on it after letting off is what can hurt it... its that slap of the rollers that can break the roller case.. in a manual VB its hard to tell if you cracked it.. pull it now while you have the time... good luck Probably around 4000rpm

just dropped the pan. zero trash.
the car will move in all gears........until you touch the throttle. then ZZZIIIIIIIIIIZZZZ from under the tunnel.
I did find two bolts convertor that were backing off. but that cant be it
and yes, "fmvb" = turbo-action forward manual valve body (forward to allow my slap-stik to work, no LBA) been in for about 10 years and 8k miles. Do you have reverse?

Car moves in reverse and all other gears...until under a load. Then it sounds like splines "slipping/grinding" and does not want to move.

High gear drum is cracked or the front planetary is just about gone. Highly doubt the sprag is broken.

Not sure I understand 87 miles with no issues but it won't move and makes grinding noises under load. Regardless, it sounds like something is broken. It needs to go on the bench.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Could be as simple as the low adjuster came loose and backing off.. drop the pan and look.. you would end up draining it anyways if you have to pull the trans

It's possible that when you "poked it again" it was just shifting to 2nd and that stripped the splines in the front planetary. Only the postmortem will tell.

Never broken one before.....full weight e body with drag radials, 402 small block, 727, turbo action fmvb, 3.91 Pulled out on street, poked it...car went sideways, I lifted, and poked it again. ZIIIIIZZZZZZZZZZ car moves under own power but any throttle produces more ZIIIIIIZZZZZZZZ. not what I needed on a car I planned to drive to Carlisle in two weeks I would say yes, it's done and is a bomb waiting to happen.

Stripped all the teeth on a ring or pinion? Color me skeptical; if it's rear end related, more likely it's differential pinion gears.

Could be a stripped spline in the yoke or maybe an axle spline gave up. Too bad you didn't have someone look under the car before you pulled the trans. If you loaded it against the brakes and the drive shaft turned but the wheels didn't, you might have saved some labor. Kevin

Stripped splines usually either work, or they don't. I've never seen one that held at low power, then partially slipped at full throttle (making the ZZZZZZZZZ noise), and then go back to working at low power again. But there is a first for everything I guess!
If it's making noise in all gears, then it's probably not a planet, because the planets don't get used in high gear (at least not that the planetary gear themselves has movement.) It's all locked together to get the 1:1 under that scenario.
Does the ZZZZZZZZZZZ noise match engine RPM, or road speed RPM? That would help diagnose what part might be hurt.
And just to clarify... it makes the ZZZZZZZZZ noise in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Reverse under throttle? When it makes this ZZZZZZZZZZ noise, does the car barely move, or does it still seem to be putting most of the power to the ground?

Pulled rear apart...
Right axle splines stripped off. You should now check the sprag to be on the safe side.

Right axle splines stripped off. Just the outer tip or all across? Got a pic?
