The hole that connects the two sides of the leak down tester is pretty small....... so it doesn’t take much of a leak to not be able to build pressure.
If the leak is bigger than that orifice in the gauge...... you’ll get nada.

That being said, the only way I can see it being a ring issue is if the comp rings are either broken, or........stuck/seized into the ring grooves.

Be interesting to see what you find.

Did you happen to do a compression test on that cyl as well?

I almost was expecting a hole in the piston it is leaking so bad. but the top of the piston looks fine.
I had the leakdown tester hooked up with pressure going into the cylinder. rockers off, so valves were closed, and even cranking the engine over, I only got a bit of pressure, maybe 20 psi if I was lucky, and it bled off right away.
I ordered some 1" thick plexiglass, that I am going to drill for the head bolt pattern and then drill tap the center for a 14mm sparkplug hole to hook up the leakdown tester. That way I can pressure check both the block and head independently, and also see inside.

I did that exact think with plexiglass

What rocker arm hold down hard ware do you use? Bolts or studs.

The rocker arm holdowns are the ARP studs.
I'm pretty sure it is not an oiling problem, but really bad blow-by.
I think #3 cylinder was not firing (bad plug wire?) and the cylinder got washed down with raw fuel.
The inside of the cylinder, cylinder head, and exhaust port of #3 were all a light yellow fuel washed look.
All the other cylinders had some black soot.
Will have more info this weekend when we get the engine out of the car.

Nice! I was just going to make a small one for one cylinder, but that's better, can pressure check the cooling too.

I would pull #3 rod and piston out and look at it for damage, if the rings are free and no other visible damage to the piston top look hard at the cylinder next scope twocents

For sure post what it ends up being (this is a strange one!) but we're (likely) gonna laugh when we find out how simple it turns out to be.

Thanks guys. Going to pull the engine this weekend, and see what happened.
Got my plexiglass yesterday. I only got a 12x12 sheet so I can't make a nice setup like the one posted earlier.
Thinking if I cut it in half and have two 6"x12" then I could cover each side, with a split in the center.

Pulled #3 piston, No compression rings installed, just the oil ring

I think it may have been my friend. He mentioned he may want to run Nitrous, so he was re-gaping the rings larger, and when I told him what I found, he thinks he gaped a set too large, and I told him to just get another set of rings from a partial set I had on the shelf. Must have got distracted and forgot to install the rings? At least the oil rings were on the piston.

Did something similar years ago. Was chatting with Peanut gallery bench racers while changing carburetor jets and reassembled with no main jets at all. Ran a little bit rich. Live and learn.

pretty much sums up my experience, unless one is present to assist me. too many mistakes later in life, i figured that out. sure took a while to learn that, however.

Having no rings is as bad as my low spot in the cylinder with no ring contact.I was having a hard time keeping the oil from leaking.

I gotta say....... that’s the first time I’ve heard of that one.

I’ve heard of upside down rings, rings in wrong grooves, wrong thickness rings, rings with almost zero gap........ but never no rings.

I don’t assemble a motor while anyone is around........ way too easy to get distracted when you’re yapping away(at least for me).

My bad, the 2nd rings were in up-side-down too frown
Have to pull all the pistons and flip the 2nd rings around.
Looked at the taper edge of the inner ring, and instructions said that goes up (for the top ring..)
If I looked at the instructions closer, goes to bottom for second ring.

Where are the missing rings? I did a Corvette intake while working at the dealer. Started it up and it had a very high idle. I'm looking for a vacuum leak when my buddy handed me the intake gaskets. It had RTV, torqued to spec, just no gaskets. When I build stuff now its by myself, no radio, no distractions.
