The hole that connects the two sides of the leak down tester is pretty small....... so it doesn’t take much of a leak to not be able to build pressure. If the leak is bigger than that orifice in the gauge...... you’ll get nada.
That being said, the only way I can see it being a ring issue is if the comp rings are either broken, or........stuck/seized into the ring grooves.
Be interesting to see what you find.
Did you happen to do a compression test on that cyl as well?

I almost was expecting a hole in the piston it is leaking so bad. but the top of the piston looks fine. I had the leakdown tester hooked up with pressure going into the cylinder. rockers off, so valves were closed, and even cranking the engine over, I only got a bit of pressure, maybe 20 psi if I was lucky, and it bled off right away. I ordered some 1" thick plexiglass, that I am going to drill for the head bolt pattern and then drill tap the center for a 14mm sparkplug hole to hook up the leakdown tester. That way I can pressure check both the block and head independently, and also see inside.

I was just going to make a small one for one cylinder, but that's better, can pressure check the cooling too.

For sure post what it ends up being (this is a strange one!) but we're (likely) gonna laugh when we find out how simple it turns out to be.

I gotta say....... that’s the first time I’ve heard of that one.
I’ve heard of upside down rings, rings in wrong grooves, wrong thickness rings, rings with almost zero gap........ but never no rings.
I don’t assemble a motor while anyone is around........ way too easy to get distracted when you’re yapping away(at least for me).

My bad, the 2nd rings were in up-side-down too Have to pull all the pistons and flip the 2nd rings around. Looked at the taper edge of the inner ring, and instructions said that goes up (for the top ring..) If I looked at the instructions closer, goes to bottom for second ring.
