I worked for Jim & Jeff years ago before their auto parts business went "big time". Jim was bracket-racing a 4-spd 429 Maverick and his brother Jeff had a 429 Ford-powered Opel, or some other mongrel tin can car. Jim became friends w/ "Dyno" Don Nicholson because of their mutual appreciation for racing Ford products, which probably helped set his direction for Pro Stock.
Anybody surprised that Jim was into the Oxon Hill street racing scene in the '70s before that? Or that his brother Jason was, too, in the '80s w/ a sleeper white GTO that caught a lot of people by surprise? I suspect I may have even witnessed Jim's last ever street race (against a friend of mine who also worked for him at one point). Even though the NHRA doesn't want any of its name drivers to admit it, I'm sure most of them (at least the older ones) started out on the street before going "legal".
Jim is (was?) a very driven and focused individual who always had a game plan. If he's in the position to retire at this point, he's probably set for life.
Oh, and if anybody ever wondered if Jim Yates ever drove a Mopar, I still remember him taking me for a drive in my own '69 Super Bee showing me how to power-shift it on Duke Street in Alexandria. He was a pretty good stick driver, too.

Good thing Dyno Don didn't work on his car. He probably would have hit it with a big hammer.
Maryland street/drag scene in the 60's - 70's was awesome BTW.

Most if not all are chiming in on this with the negative responses just because Jim drove a brand-x..if he drove a mopar his whole career you'd be saying how great he was..insert rose color glasses here...

I think it's fair to form an opinion about a racer based on his demeanor and camera presence, Yates was one of those who was never shy about voicing his political/religious opinions in finish line interviews; that's why I took a dislike of him and his ilk.

The whole thing that irrates me is: Most of us race with our own money or a few small sponsors. We do it for the love of the sport, the competition, the chance of winning etc. It seems that when the Pros lose a major sposor or have to spend out of their own pockets they fold and cry the blues. How much can they really like the sport if they aren`t willing to spend their own money. Then again maybe they`re smarter than us not spending their own money.... just something to think about.

anybody remember when the guy yates was racing (kj?) blew his engine and it was doing that freakie 10,000 rpm diesel trick, running on oil? yates ran into the cloud to make sure no one was hurt or in trouble, and he almost got run over by the safety safari. you guys think any other pro stock driver would have done that? i don't. he's ok.
for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?
