Don't know what to say. The first engine I pulled apart was mine. I was the second owner. First owner never touched it. It was an early 72 Demon. Has 2.02 valve and 10.5:1 Pistons. And it had a gasket under the pump. That was just the first one.

I've pulled apart many untouched cores over the years and none of them had an oil pump gasket. 318s a few 340s and a bunch of 360s. Only time I find them is when the engine has been in to.

I don't use them, never had any issues. Years ago I had an all original 72 340 Duster, I knew both previous owners and it had never been apart. When I rebuilt it there was no gasket on the oil pump.

Pulled apart an untouched 60,000 mile 318 yesterday. No oil pump gasket found.

Are you saying the goop built up around the front oil pump bolt on the pump and block and in the machine marks on both parts is not a gasket sealer or "sealing goop" of some type?
