I use 1/4 inch thick 1 inch wide straps with 3/8 bolts, installed with all the weight on them A friend of mine found out he could make the front of his drag car raise up equally by moving the clamps behind the rear end housing, I tried it later on my 1969 Dodge dart and that works well also He said to leave the driver side in the stock position and move the passenger side up towards the rear end housing one leaf at a time, mine work best with the passenger side almost directly behind the rear end housing

i like to use square top u-bolts in 5/16 or 3/8 diameter with 1/4"x1"wide straps [holes sized to the u-bolt diameter and strap length corresponding to include the size of the appropriate flat washer used]. sometimes though, square top u-bolts may be tough to find unless looking through a place like mcmaster-carr. which ever way a guy clamps the springs, cut off excess bolt length and round the threaded ends. your arms and head will thank you !

The clamps are not actually clamps. They are alignment brackets to hold all the leafs in alignment with the main leaf.
On a totally separate note. Can not debate the fact some cars have improved their 60' time with a front segment clamped together. It basically makes the forward section a solid bar but their is a big downside to that procedure.
The leafs are meant to slide on each other. Picture an arched set of leafs, when they are compressed flat they bottom ones will grow longer. If they are clamped they are not allowed to slide. Fact is 4000lbs and a dip in the road will force them to slide but the friction set by the clamps will make the suspension have a memory. Push down and it will want to stay down, pull up and it will stay up.

There is some GREAT advice above. You can buy leaf spring clamps at most auto parts stores in the "truck suspension" section.

Just keep an eye on clamp-to-sidewall clearance when installing/moving aftermarket clamps. this one is VERY important, especially if you make your own using two bolts and two plates ! also, when doing so, round all the square edges. this not only makes them look better, it also protects the sidewall if it just "kisses". unless you can clearly see mucho clearance, look at the sidewall after a few miles to see if it has developed any "shiny" areas near the clamp location[s].

definitely add clamps as they suggested the those locations, believe it or not I actually used some good heavy duty stainless hose clamps 8 years ago and they have held up so far, thin, cheap and quick!
