There is a small metal Z shaped thing in the center top of the metering block. Is that what you mean???? The center carb is a List 4144-4, I have done nothing to it but change jets and adjust idle screws.

Some tips:
Try bumpin the idle to at least 900 to 1000. IMO, most 6 packs like the higher idle.
Get yourself an idle solenoid so it will shut off when you want it.

Run a fuel regulator with gage, set for about 6.5 psi esp if you have the larger needles and seats.
Run the fuel level so it drips out the bottom of the site hole.

BTW, you running a vacuum advance? You set the idle and timing without it connected?

No VA. It does like to idle around 900-1000 and it won't completely die unless you really brake hard at that RPM. I am unsure of the fuel pressure, although the mechanical fuel pump I have is not supposed to require a regulator.
Can anyone tell me WHY it would die when braking, other than the fuel level being too high????? With the rich fuel smell it seems to want more air. I can do that 2 ways I think, either drill out the tthrottle plates or open the idle circuit bleed. Anybody ever drill and tap that hole for screw in bleeds??? It does not have screw in bleeds now.

if i set my idle at 800 it will do the same thing. some place i read where you should have your idle set at 1000 for 4spd 6pk cars. i run mine at 950 and its fine. i will try to find that info. hope this helps. i know it dosen't answer your question as to why this happens. someone should know otherwise why would it be to have the idle set at 1000rpm. maybe mike at dayclona would know?

My six pack did that. could be leaning out cause the fuel is moving away from the jets... followed by the fuel causing the floats to drop and add too much fuel into the bowl. This causes the momentary fat mixture until things settle down a bit.

Move your idle speed on up and quit using the brakes!
Also, get an idle solenoid. It is a high idling six packs best friend.

Oh, and one more thing..... DONT drill the throttle plates. It wont solve this problem of almost stalling.
