I am a frequent critic of the US EPA,
but here is an old paper by remarkable EPA researchers
where they converted a VW 4 cylinder diesel
to sparkplug operation on methanol and ethanol.
They kept the 19 to 1 compression ratio.

They used EGR in very innovative ways, almost making it into a throttle alternative for adjusting power output.

Note the interesting bit about Holley 12 hole fuel injectors testing out to having the best atomization.
