Nice work Alan; I will be trying something similar but with (probably) inferior results! Dave

The one good original driveshaft I had was kind of a rust color but it was a coating, not actual rust. It would not come off when you wiped it and was even hard to wire wheel off.
Hard to say what that was but it may have been a temporary metal protectant like cosmoline. Production line drive shafts were not painted.

PVC pipe with Evap-O-Rust is proven ez method see pic. Driveshaft is bouyant, will float, you will need to weight down end to submerge in pipe. Nice natural finish results, clear coat and u r done. Any surface rust that may appear after a few months, so much the better for realistic look.

Those bare metal driveshafts looks fantastic guys Last year I put 700 miles on the BARRELCUDA driving the wheels off of it, yesterday I took it for a blast as well on the "salt dusted" roads of Ontario, so unfortunately the bare metal just won't hold up for me. I feel the next best solutuion is to paint it to look like bare metal. I wish I could live like you guys do!

FIRST OFF: Driveshafts are bare steel when they leave the factory.
Any attemp to paint a driveshaft any colour would be considered incorrect.
HOWEVER: *I live in the rust belt, 99.9% of the cars I've restored in the last 25 years have had very rusty driveshafts and need work to look smooth and new again.
*100% of the cars I've restored get driven and bare steel would be nothing less then a rusty mess in a very short time.
THEREFORE: I've choosen to paint the driveshafts on the cars I've restored. After a good blasting, rust pitts filled, sanded and primed, I paint them with Seymore's Stainless Steel Paint. I paint the ends in a Cast colour then used several different types of tinted clear coat to give to realizim... After this they can be sent out for a balance check if necessary.
AGAIN: This IS NOT correct...

Very nice Alan, i think this will be my method of choice.
Rick.

i cleaned the light surface rust off my shaft in 1991 with 3m scratchy pad. haven't touched it in 18 yrs other then using mopar MP50 on it once a year.i put a yellow paint pen line directly above number as to draw attenion to it because most people didn't know the number was even stamped on shaft.the paint line looks factory even though its not but nobody knows the difference.
what do you do flip the car on it's SIDE at shows , are you one of THOSE guys with MIRRORS under the car ?

neither, when i get to a show like carlisle or the mopar nationals i just leave it in enclosed trailer with both side and rear ramp doors open and a couple blankets for people to lay on so they can take pictures. this way its easier to see and my tires don't get any grass stains on them.

Not that I am offended since I do use mirrors to show off the underside of the car, but if you put all that hard work into a car, wouldn't you want someone to look at the undercarriage as well as everything else you have restored on a car?

I know of a company that is seriously considering making all new driveshafts for mopars. And has done a couple prototypes .
tubes are the easy part. Issue is the cast end caps
yes they are very close to being available.

if judges or anyone else wants to see the bottom of my car they can lay on the ground to look.since i want to enjoy my car again i replaced the redlines and steel wheels with some nice aftermarket rubber and drive it. after 3 years the original bare driveshaft is still rust free.MP50 once a year keeps the bare metal, bare.
