What tricks have you done for getting
an original drive shaft to look like
bare steel. Of course both 42.6 shafts that
I have are pitted in some areas, so I had to fill and prime.

I think I remember this topic when Alan was restoring the "Barrelcuda"... you might try to find his thread in the "Best Of" section and see how he did his.

What about buying a new one? That way you don't have to "fill and prime" How would do that if it's supposed to be bare?

Pete Bloathner does an excellent job of restoring them in bare metal. Other attempts I've seen were nice but were faux finished with paint and not 100% correct

Here's some links that should help...

This thread here shows how Troy resto'd his original (not new core) driveshaft at home himself: https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...ID=#Post4363151

Here another driveshaft thread showing one of Pete's restored driveshafts: https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...part=1&vc=1

Ok Scott you read what he said, and you know I'm
good with PVC Pipe. It is an idea for soaking it.

Paul Herd restoration book says, driveshafts should be finished in a stainless steel color. Some were painted gloss black. the rear-end yoke should be painted cast iron gray.

There is no (I repeat NO) restoration book on the market that covers Mopar restoration that is 100% accurate, most have allot of bad information. Some are better than others, but that's where it ends. What you quoted from Herds book is a good example of bad information.

FIRST OFF:
Driveshafts are bare steel when they leave the factory.

Any attemp to paint a driveshaft any colour would be considered incorrect.

HOWEVER:
*I live in the rust belt, 99.9% of the cars I've restored in the last 25 years have had very rusty driveshafts and need work to look smooth and new again.

*100% of the cars I've restored get driven and bare steel would be nothing less then a rusty mess in a very short time.

THEREFORE:
I've choosen to paint the driveshafts on the cars I've restored.
After a good blasting, rust pitts filled, sanded and primed, I paint them with Seymore's Stainless Steel Paint. I paint the ends in a Cast colour then used several different types of tinted clear coat to give to realizim...
After this they can be sent out for a balance check if necessary.

AGAIN:
This IS NOT correct...

I would rather have an incorrect one like yours than a correct one that was brown in a few weeks.
Looks very good.

Other than the factory diagrams, that book is not worth the paper it's printed on. I have it and there are numerous mistakes throughout the book. If you have resto questions, ask them here. The people on this board are far more knowledgable.

That book is very useful as a BOTTOM LINER for a BIRD CAGE , it has alot of incorrect info in it .

Typically they cut off the weight (if any) and weld on a new one. This requires some touch up work obiviously

nothing worse then seeing a high dollar resto then looking under the car and seeing a painted bottom ,painted or pitted drive shaft and a Dana 60 with axle tube's pitted.if you see a painted drive shaft its easy to see why.
