John is a friend of mine and he's currently working on a 76 Duster. Since I am home today I thought I'd start a post for him (with his permission) He will add more shots later

Here is where he started 225,904, 7-1/4, A/C, disc brakes, bench seat, fold down rear seat, and cop wheels

(my first pic is taken in the same exact spot...different angle)

Here is what we found digging around once the panel was removed. Now I am no expert but I dont think these screws are original Mopar equipment. Maybe Hustle stuff huh? lol

I also had to install new upper control arm bushings and ball joints. Cleaned up the control arm and wheelwells while I was there. Still needs more work in there but it is a start.

There were also some pretty ugly rims and tires on here when I brought it home. Finally got some other rims, blasted them to remove all the flaws, primed and painted them and added some nicer looking tires.

Last pic for tonight. Here it is in mostly primer. As body work gets going I will post more pics. I have just been sanding and priming areas in order to see what I find that I get the fun of fixing. Plus I wanted to see how much of the car I could actually prime in the garage without the wife coming out and cutting off my air. By the way the other side is mostly in primer too.

You met my wife, what do you think...I can fix the air...it is my neck I fear. lol I have acquired a few 8 3/4 rearends. A B body and a C Body...one of them will make it into the car. The B looks like it will fit with the wheels and tires that I have now but I am still thinking. UCUDANT keeps bugging me to minitub it. That will depend on what goes into the 71 dated 360 block we recently were given. Donations are awesome. If I can afford to stroke it then minitub will be a necessity and that means cutting down a housing and axles. Good thing I have two to play with and a third set of axles. Thanks Bob

Opps one more post for the night. This is a shot of the car owner. I am building it for him. Well I should say he is helping me build the car as you can see. This is my 22 month old Justin. He loves the car already. Just trying to do my share and bringing up the next generation of Mopar addicts. They will all be poor, since the prices of these things keep going up as they are harder to find but at least they will be happy.

UCUDANT headed off to the MATS this weekend with out me. But I am not upset...a little jealous is all, but then again while he is out looking at other peoples cars I am here working on mine. Here is a shot of the patch tack welded into the right rear quarter.

Here is a close up pics of the boogered up welds. oh well nothing a steady hand a new grinder disk cant' cure. Someone on MOPARTS once said it aint' F*ed up until you cant fix it no more. When you look at it that way...those welds look really good because they are progress to what what will one day be one badazz looking ride.

The welds aren't THAT bad. You gotta grind 'em down anyway!

Here are the welds after grinding. Still need a little work before metal working with a puller and hammer but I am please with the progress thus far.

Here is another view of the new and improved rust free quarter.

I seen another Duster tonight at the Smith store with the same qtr panel cut out waiting for a patch. Dang Rusters.

Nice work I see that patch fit well. Any trimming or did it plug right in? Keep that welder ready I'll be home this weekend

Also one of the coolest parts of the project is little Justins interest. He is Dad's lil buddy and enjoys doing what Dad does. I am sure one day he will look back on this car's build with a great fondness

The patch took a little bit of bending, tweaking, filing, hammaering and grinding to make it fit just so. Them I rought it up a bit and filled with kitty hair. Used to hide small imperfections before skimms of bondo and primmer and lots and lots of block sanding. OH well it is called "Body work", not "Body fun".

We worked on Bob's car today. I also worked on brakes, front and rear on my Duster..Not pic worthy sorry. I will put Bob's car here since I laid next to it more today than I did my wife today.

Not alot of progress but did get to work alittle on the car this week.

Here is a before shot of the taillight. Silver is faded from around the lens. Black is all but gone from the chrome ring.

Redid the silver on the lens in this shot.

By the way does anyone know where I can get the busted up filler piece showing between the bumper and the body? Or is it possible to move the bumper in and just get rid of that piece all together? It doesn't look like the bumper will line up with the body perfectly like the earlier Duster did but it might be possible. Just wondering if any of you have done it and if so could you post a pic.

This is out of sequence of how I did the job but here is a pic of the black ring on the chrome. I used a self etching primer and some trim black from eastwood to complete this part of the project.

I have given up trying to find the filler piece for the bumpers, plus even with new ones on there it would feel like the bumper is still way too far out. Kind like the pic below. I wanted to move it in closer anyways. I asked if anyone knew how a few post up in this forum and received no replies. Not to be discouraged and being a tad bit stubborn, I figured I was going to figure a way to do it on my own and with the original mounts to boot.

This is a pic of the spacing for the bumper brackets before modification.

On the underside of the car you can remove the nut that holds the two pieces of the bumper bracket together and remove the bumper. Then I drilled the hole larger in the rear of the bracket piece still on the car. That lets the two pieces of the bracket slide in all the way. I will have to go back and tap the rod shown in the pic to remount the bumper.

This pic shows from the outside that I can slide the bumper bracket way in on the car now.

And finally here is a pic of the bumper back on the car. There is still a little gap showing but I can rework the old broken up filler panel to make a new one now...smaller and tighter fitting. No huge gap anymore...Yeah

Thanks, It turned out pretty good. Still needs a little tweaking though. I added a pic of the rear qtr panel that we welded a patch in to some time ago. This is after the first coat of high build primmer.

Also wanted to show you guys the idea of a hoodscoop for the car. Kustom built,(out of cardboard) by myself and Mouse...aka Mr Marquez. just a template, the real one will be fiberglass mess surrounding an inner core made out of steel screen for strength.

Any thoughts on the look of it? Really guy we want input. It was modeled after the challenger scoop.

I can add more pics if anyone would like to add input, just let me know. We acquired a second hood to cut up last week end at a swamp meet. $20 off a bud named Mad Mac.

Pixed up a set of caps for the car tonight also ... they should be here next week. $85 on EBAY, second bid and I got them.

Party is over for tonight. The fun has come to and end and Justin isnt looking to happy about it. But dont worry there will be more to come. I just installed a Holley blue pump and 3/8 line this weekend. Recarpetted the storage area or pass through area between the trunk and the rear seat. I will get some pics posted soon. I know the blue pump is a little overkill for the slanty but this car is being prepped for surgery...removal of the slanty and transplant a 71 360 transformed into a respectable 408 stroker moter. That is my winter time planes anyways.

Had a few pics on my phone of a stripe I tried to paint on with a spraycan of flat black and a roll of masking tape. Oh yeah and a few/couple beers.
I might actually give it a go in the final project...minus the beer of course

Personally, the scoop doesn't really "work", if you must scoop it I'd either go with a factory single piece bolt on twin scoop, or the earlier year style dual scoops, for a more serious look I'd go with a fiberglass hood with a built in 6 pack scoop

I was about to ask where you bought the scoop then i realized it was cardboard. I would love to have the style of hoodscoop on my dart

OK so here is the deal, and please no yelling about what I am about to say. I have an E body console from a challenger that I want to put in my Duster...a body of course. Retrofitting it in is no problem since I have been doing this sort of work for 20 years. The question is what aftermarket shifter would you guys put in the car? B&M's are nice but so is Hurst, and then what model and what would fit best. Also need a good fix to removing the gear indicator that would be left on the column. Where can I get a decent replacement???do other models without indicators fit this column?

I really like the 68 S/S scoop on 70-71 Dusters, I'm not sure how they would look on a later Duster though. They would be easy to bend up out of sheet metal if you're low buck. On the shifter I find the aftermarket shifters always feel flimsey and the cable likes to gravitate towards the exhaust system. Personally I would find a factory slapstick out of a 70-75 B/E body and use it. But that's just from previous experience.

I have two hoods now so one will stay stock and I need to decide on the scoop design for the other one yet, but as far as the shifter goes I took your advice and went for the slap stick. I got it for $31 so it was definately cheaper than the aftermarket ones. It doesnt have the T handle on though so I have to find one but everything else is there.

A 74 Road Runner hood bubble grafted on would look wicked if it was not too large to fit the design of the hood.

In order to get the wheel to work, I cut down an old bent crush can. I had to remove about 2.5 inches which removed the bent area too. bonus. The placement of the wheel is perfect for me now. I still need to get up the ambition to put the slap stick in and remove the column shifter and indicator.

I wanted a pistol grip shifter handle so I grabbed some walnut and an angle grinder and went to work. Not to specs by any means but it fits my hand just right. I will post pics of the adapter once it is finished to show how it will attach to the slap stick.

I posted a while back about making a hood scoop for the car. The Tall one was hard as he!! to see around so I picked up an old beat up Cuda hood and cut the center out of it and the Duster hood and welded the two together.

Here is another angle of the hood. If you fuse a Duster and a Cuda hood...is it a Custer or a Dusda??? ***Please MOPAR purist don't hate me for chopping up a Cuda hood, it was actually pretty banged up and I just gave it new life.***

I am almost ready to start painting...finally...Here is the stripe design I am using. It isn't perfect right now because I just threw it on with some masking tape and flat black paint to get an idea of what it would look like. It is hard to visualize on paper. The Stripe will be done in Viper Silver. Everything below the stripe will be Black and the top of the car above the stripe will be Plum Crazy from the new Challengers.

Thanks. I wasn't sure about whether or not I would be able to do it and make it look nice. I am pretty pleased with it. I am dying to paint this thing. I cant wait to look out over a freshly painted hood.

Here is a question to all those that would care to give me some advice. I have two blocks: a 340 and a 360, both are bare blocks but the 340 has a bit of damage to a cylinder. It will probably need to be sleeved. I will try to post some pics of the damage this week. Either engine I choose for the project will be stroked. Which one would you do? Is it worth it to get the cylinder repaired to have the prestige of having a 340.....

340 stroker vrs 360 stroker
single choice

In the grand scheme of things don't waste your money on the repair. Either block stroked will you give more power than you will ever need on the street.
