I have a daily 70 charger with a 440 but I'm planning on getting SRP flat top pistons, headers, RPM heads (whole new valvetrain), 5 speed TKO-600, and either 3.55 or 3.73 gears. Just to add, I also have a performer intake and holley carb (which I also need help on deciding a new one, vac secondary but what size). I was wondering which cam I should get, I'm between the Comp XE268H and the XE274H. I've heard good about both for street applications but they're very similar so what are your guys opinions?

We ran Summits cams in both BBs and SBs.The small one is close to stock but a bump up.The large one is a bit more lumpy but has decent street manners.Ran one in my 440 for 4 years and was happy.I ran a 800 double pumper on my 440 and 383 bee.Rocky

I have run most of the XE grinds, nice cams, but they are noisy. If you dont mind a little noise run a purpleshaft .528 mechanical. Its worth at least 25HP on the XE275HL and its very mellow. I have one in my 440 with SRP pistons and it runs great!

Thanks for all the replies but I am only looking at the xtreme energy cams (or another brand thats similar) simply because I dont want too much for daily driving (I was looking at the Hi Lifts but decided not to get them). I also have another question to add: if i were to get 3.73 gears would the High Lifts be better?

I run the Comp XE274H with .488/.491 lift in my 69 440 cu in car with 3:91 gears and like it. But as stated above, it is a bit noisey. Don't go over .500 lift on your cam chose unless you have valve reliefs in your flat top pistons.

I second the MOPAR 528 cam . Changed out a comp XE268 in my 451 earlier this year and very happy. Starts and idles nicer , and way out rips the Comp cam in low and top charge. That Comp cam would always stink at idle and yes just as noisy as the 528 solid .

Of the two posted, I would suggest the 274H. Its 230 degree @.050 intake duration should have decent street manners and power brakes probably OK with a 440. A little rump at idle. I would go with 3.55 or even 3.23 rear personally. The smaller cam would be fine if you want a more mellow feel and less rump.

FWIW I run a B 496, Ed heads and manual transmission with MM lobe solid flat tappet (243 @.050, .55" lift). Runs very well on the street (eg IL to San Diego - IL).

Your Ed heads would flow more with more lift... I agree a mechanical FT like the 528 would make a better running engine. Initial lash setup is much easier vs a hydraulic and it will not need adjusted much with good valvetrain parts and setup. Overall a simpler and more reliable setup IMO.

3rd. Ran it in a 440 in a '71 'cuda. Very good natured and tons of torque!

There are a bunch of better hyd lobes than comp xe and many are old as dirt but don't make noise or kill parts. You can pm me or contact someone that has a clue. A mild solid(like the MP .528 ) would be a good choice for a street car.

I hate when ppl gets stuck into Comp Cams like chebbby guys do.

Crower, Lunati, Hughes engines... shame Engle is not anymore around like 5 or 10 years ago. Lot of ppl used to get the Engle splitted grind K56/K58

Personally, I’m fan of Crower being 112 degrees for street manners.

Need to note I’m not a mech or performance expert but by specs I like those

To my stroked 400(451) 10.2:1 CR I choose the 282HDP but the 271HDP was good too. I think for a flat top 440 thats a better one on street.

comp garbage? I like engles; trouble free. I like some crane lobes too.

Never said garbage, I just said there are MANY options sometimes better, toward to Mopar engines and less generic grinds than Comps. i allways have felt Comp being a generic Chebbby based grinds. Dunno up there, but down here Comp is like a belly button LOL

I have an old Engle cam I picked up this summer. Not sure what to use it in.
To the OP, talk to Dwayne Porter,he should be able to give you a good idea of what you need.
I run a Scott Brown .563/.555 that is a solid cam that is very close to the .528 Mopar, which I was going to go with unitl I ran across this cam. I don't think you can go wrong with the mechanical Mopar cam.

If you're absolutely married to Comp Cams then the 274 will work just fine for you. I ran one in a heavy car with a 360 and 4.10 gears for years. Drove just fine and never an issue with power brakes.

I'll say it! Comp Cams are trash and not the Comp Cams of old!

Stay far away from their hydraulic roller lifters in specific.

Oh, and don't bother asking them for advice on grinds for your combo. Phone or email. mad

Man , a year ago when i was putting my engine together , you would of thought from all the GREAT ADVICE i got from this website that the Comp Cams XE Hydraulic Series was the only way to go - Especially there XEHL Series Cams

Now a year later , there Trash - Garbage - Junk , So many better options

I looked at Howards - Lunati etc. back then , read countless builds online , all the reviews from other Mopar Websites BUT BUT BUT

YIKES !!!! What the hell happened

comp cams seems to have won the marketing battle with their large dealer network and all the favorable magazine/internet write-ups. very unfortunate. the internet isn't always your friend either.
