Just wondering what parts are good to carry in our old cars in case of a breakdown, I guess it would be the most common parts that fail.

Install a hidden MSD and never worry about either again!

I carry a fire extinguisher, flat blade screwdriver and 1/2" wrench. The latter two for doing carb and timing adjustments.

Short trips, nothing. Long trips (like Buffalo NY to Mopar Nationals)? Well, spare rotor and cap, a couple ignition wires, duct tape, safety wire, basic tool box with screw drivers, sockets and wrenches. Usually all tools needed to change alternator, starter, tire, etc. I'll also carry a small coil of 12 ga stranded wire and electrical tape. For fluids, a quart or two of oil. Maybe a gallon of water. And a AAA card with long distance towing.

nothing. I have a cell phone and AAA if I need it but generally my older stuff works fine, because I have a very good mechanic.

Me.

This is pretty much my list... tweaked a little for retrofit EFI. Only thing I changed was several gallons of water, brimmed hat and long sleeve shirt for a southern AZ desert crossing (I sunburn easily). Gladly I did not need any of it for an X country trip IL-CA and back.

Same here, the financials just don't add up for AAA.
Way overpriced for the small benefits

Spare wife , so she can help push

Anyways how much extra is the Hagerty Plus or Premium plan and it only covers your collector car , that’s why I just keep the Hagerty Standard

AAA covers all my vehicles , drivers , hell one tow job basically covers the premium

They even towed my Snowmobile trailer for me once on a flatbed , that was Awesome especially considering where I was

Cell phone and AAA. Last tow I needed was after 100 miles on the donut spare in my BMW. I was still 100 miles from home. I wasn't going to push that tire on the freeway, which was my option at that point. It was a Sunday afternoon into evening and a tire that couldn't just be bought anywhere, especially in Cool, CA or even Ripon where the tow originated.

A phone, a $&@ or three, a small tool kit and some 'road service'...

All JIC...

Vintage 'road time' since 1994-have never had the need for any 'spare' parts...

My dad got me used to carrying spare parts. When I was driving my duster a lot I got carried awa with the spare stuff. But it saved my ass so I won't stop. I have a husky toolmbox with the clear plastic lid my mom gave me. In the bottom I have some heater hose and fuel line, some of the bigger items, an alternator, complete distributor with cap and rotor, fuel pump, ignition box.in the clear top I have smaller parts like voltage regulator, ballast, there's a coil in there somewhere. Some carb parts and some other crap. I carry a tool roll. Some fluids in a milk crate, and 2 Jeep donuts in the spare tire well. I have since put ez efi on the car and after a few issues, don't feel as confident to drive it long distances. Plus I don't have spare parts to get it going on the side of the road.
It's overkill but I don't want to be stranded somewhere with wife and kid.

just the basic of tools is about it, long or short distance makes no difference to me . I build them to drive them . And try my best to make sure I use quality parts. That said I do realize theres always the chance something can go wrong
For that ---------- - AAA card.

I carry the normal mopar stuff in the glove compartment since the 1980s. Never needed it until about 2012 or so. Car quite running in a local parking lot 3 miles from home. Called the wife first and asked her to come get me and I would go back with tools to figure it out.

After I hung up I remembered the glove compartment stuff. I plugged in a spare ballast resister and let it hang and the car started! Called my wife back and cancelled and drove the car home. I mounted the spare ballast resister and it is still there today.

From whats here so far it sounds like the number 1 part that fails is the ballast resister. Thanks for all the info.

I've been driving Mopars since 1984 and have replaced zero ballasts. At least 10 different ones, points or electronic ignition didn't matter.

Not sure why people have such issues with them.

Been driving Mopars since the 70's...

Municipal;Hi-Po;pedestrian...

High-mileage;fresh resto's;street/drag cars...

I've experienced zero ballast resistor failures...

The 'failures' get the press...

The millions of miles these cars racked-up as 'work' vehicles does not make/and did not make good copy...

Nothing.

Take care of your stuff and your stuff takes care of you.

2.2 cars are supposedly infamous for the distributor pickup deciding to fail with zero warning.

Two years ago I had a valve seat fall out of the head and almost get rear ended after the acceleration fell off abruptly... Maybe I should bring a spare head, gasket and torque wrench in the trunk ?

For $10 every six months I do have towing, jump start, bring me gas on my State Farm Insurance Policy, but I still carry the stuff I wrote previously because I'd rather be able to get myself going and drive myself home if possible. If that's not possible my cell phone and the wrecker is paid for and it's only $20 a year insurance, and I've used it before, like when my fuel pump when out on my Dippy.

Back when I had my '74 Dodge truck I carried a small box of spare parts under the seat. Spare ballast resistor, an orange box, a coil, etc. Not a lot of stuff but it did save my bacon once or twice. That was back before everyone had a cell phone.

Nothing in the 'Cuda, AAA card with 100 mile tow. I have a few hand tools but nothing extensive.

I have a ballast and orange box in the Warlock.

Usually nothing but the cell phone.
If going on longer trips, an extra fuel container as I have ran out of fuel before. A gallon or two of water if the car or driver overheats. A leatherman multi-tool, small flat blade screwdriver, 1/2" and 9/16" combination wrench (minimum). Sometimes I just throw the Craftsman tool kit in, like this one on sale for Fathers day:
http://www.sears.com/craftsman-450-piece..._450mechanicset

Jumper cables, about 20-30 feet of 12 to 14 AWG wire. A 1" wide tie-down ratchet strap.

cellphone and sometimes jumper cables if im running a questionable battery is all i have. I usually keep the old fan belts when they are replaced in the trunk just i case but have never needed them. If something is going to destroy a belt chances are a used one wont get you much further anyway but at least its less junk kicking around the shop.
