I dont know why you hate it.. most all of the turbo cars run it.. put the exhaust where ever it fits and out of the way.. plus its easier to fab up(most of the time) ![wave wave](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/custom/wave.gif)

1 ..its stupid loud, all we need is more reasons to want to shut tracks down 2.. locally, even 12 2nd cars are doing it .. 3.. often , I'm in my car in staging , they pull up, running e85 or alcohol not smart enough to run the car at their spot and warm it up , run that stinky cra p right at me ..fumes me out, plus the rev tune it , obnoxious
4 .. nhra prostock does not shoot the exhaust thru the fender, so most of those reasons above are not vaild

I kinda like it, but doesn't the rule book say the exhaust has to exit toward the rear of the car?

When I left NY, noise regulations were already pretty tight. 104db was max, and a stroker big block would get past that without much effort. Instead of the track mandating mufflers, they tried turn downs first. Seemed to help a lot. Side fender exhaust, I can't see going over very well with the noise police.

I like em but agree that it's getting a little stupid if your running them on a 12 second shitbox, they are doing it down here but seems to be only on the super fast radial cars.
Now TURN DOWNS, they should be banned. How many have been dusted after you spent the morning polishing your car ?

I thought about putting the exhaust out the fender when I built my car but, I just couldn't do it. It would have been much easier though.

There was a guy a few years ago that mounted his headers like they use in drag boats except exhaust going forward. Had 2 big slots in the hood so it would open. LOL What a piece of crap, but he was racing.

Some might even go for that, but from where your from you now better, I think we first used/made them in 1976. As joe dirt as it may be I used to want to run the 8 zoomie type pipes on the street, just BECAUSE they were loud, cool and looked like a fire breathing dragon at night. But imagine the fumes that would be in the car/cabin. I'm going to be the next trendsetter with these:

I will say I am not a huge fan wither but in some circumstances it makes plenty of since. I wish I had done it on my stratus initially and when we do the stainless stuff they will be fender exit.

IF, their daddy pays for it! You would think it would happen, but very seldom and I don't have the answer. Maybe they don't have the passion like their dad-mom did. Running the pipes out the fender is just lazy and being a copycat.

Darned old noisy drag cars...
Noisy jr dragsters too... Jegs sells an electric jr.
All kidding aside, I'm old too. There are times when being further deafened, and choked in the lanes bothers me too, when in the past I wouldn't have even noticed.
I hate 20 people on the line with a small tire car since it takes 10 minutes for them to do a burnout, and stage. Only to blow the tires off, leak, stall, backfire, not restart, ect. I even look at the crowd the same way my parents probably looked at hippies lol.
Getting old is a cruel joke to play on people.

I am not a fan of the thru fender exhaust, but it sure makes things simple. I don't think side exhaust sounds as good as chassis type as you mainly hear just the one side facing you if you are close. The most annoying drag car sound for me was the Mazda rotary 90 cube . Like the Terry Hoard car of years ago. High rpm and powerful, but terrible to hear. Mark

My S/P car has 4.0 inch turn outs exiting under the front edge of the doors, Portland International raceway has a noise limit of 95 DB taken at the 330 lights on the drivers side of the track, my car is louder than that with the turn outs pointed out. The track manager suggested turning the drivers side turn out towards the passenger side, I did and that worked great ![work work](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/custom/work.gif) A lot of the NHRA S/G racers where pointing theirs both inwards to have them help cancel each side out as well as adding skirting onto the rocker panels to keep the noise under the car ![work work](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/custom/work.gif) As far as warming up my car on E85 in the lanes, I don't ![down down](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/custom/down.gif) I drive it around the pits to get the engine oil, tranny fluid and rear gear oil warmed up before making a run

With a turbo up front, it makes sense to go through the fender or out from underneath up front. Zoomies are what they are. Nitrous? I wouldn't want a 5" flamethrower under the car and the turnups add downforce to the car. Other then being on something that it makes sense on, it looks as stupid as someone helping a guy get a 12 second turd into the beams, like they do at Lights Out..
You guys who don't like Jr Dragsters just don't like having to race a kid with 18 year old reflexes and eyesight, great hand-eye coordination from the video games, and 10 years of drag racing experience.

On my Rampage I have the dumps both facing inward to try and cancel each other.. I havent checked the DB on it to see if it helps.. but it should ![wave wave](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/custom/wave.gif)

Driver probably needs ear plugs though.

Turbo cars really isn't my gripe , exhaust down low isn't my gripe most of those people are professional test and tuners .
My gripe with them is it takes 6 people to run the car and 15 minutes to stage it .
Its the people that poke them thru with a N/A slow car , right about belly button height
The lips of fools bring them strife, and their mouths invite a beating.Proverbs 18:6

I am not a fan of the glory holes or bull horns. I understand that with packaging, wheel stands, etc sometimes it is needed. I won't be hole sawing my fenders anytime soon for them.... Cracks me up though when you see a car coming back thru the pits after a pass and the whole side of the car is black if the tune is off.

I feel the red color is intimidating and makes me feel threatened by race cars. Great! Now I have to go see a shrink. I hope you're happy. Those red JC Whitney shocks intimidate me too. Lol 😂

Mr P : As an audio engineer for the last 38 years: i can tell you Factually that yes, you can tune out "certain" frequencies by turning the pipes toward each other .
Here's the deal- it takes work, time, rpm and a real time analyzer with a decent reference mic to know what your tuning, what your canceling etc.
That said- in todays world, we actually have some very good apps for this on the iphone- believe it or not , every professional concert engineer has them for spot checks etc.
there are some things to know, be aware of such as frequencies below 100 hz being fairly omni directional and big bore stroker motors have plenty down low.
If anyone wants to put their car on a chassis dyno to do exhaust tuning for cancellation to achieve as much sound control as possible, feel free to contact me and i will be happy to help remotely.
This is the one area I feel certain i could be of help to the moparts community.
If this is a big deal or, coming big deal- I may put our car on the chassis dyno and get some readings/test bed work done and share it. There will be certain areas that will be general rules- data that applies to all etc.
Sound is simply the movement of air at different rates of speed/vibration- its just math.
If we know the frequency areas that are exceeding limits, we can tune to reduce/cancel and thus produce results.
I should be at the track Saturday to help some guys with chassis tuning and will try to get some audio data while there, its an interesting subject.
If there is interest in this area- let me know . It would be nice to give something back to this community.

I feel sure there is already some data out there I can access - will take a look . I spent about 20 years in the exhaust lab doing mainly exhaust and also worked as a sound guy in a band for 4 more years.. was fun but a PITA till I quit that.. my total time at Chrysler was 35 years.. 90% of the time in fuel and exhaust

I wouldn't call it a hot new trend. People have been doing it for many years, and for various aforementioned reasons. Fast or slow, who really cares. Some get the "look" just right and some don't.
I always get a good chuckle when a nitrous guy bangs a gun through the motor and his crew guy is standing right in the line of fire....LMAO!

4 .. nhra prostock does not shoot the exhaust thru the fender, so most of those reasons above are not vaild Loud and stinky bothers you? Time to find a new sport.

Flip's el camino fender headers were not a new trend but they were annoyingly loud. The fender headers and the the low buck look had to have suckered some quick bucks for him on the street. RIP Flip. ![angel angel](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/custom/angel.gif)

I'm just happy to make it to the track. Doesn't happen very often these days. If I had a strictly race car, I'd have fender exits on it, although I like em low and behind the front tire. Makes transmission access SOOOOO much easier. And yeah, the bullhorns (or whatever you want to call em) look like dog crap.
