Just working a set of heads this week that came off of what I believe to be one of the most powerfull naturally aspirated 59 degree head small block Chryslers ever built. I guess the reason I'm posting about it is because of the lack of "trickery" in the motor. I've known the owner for maybe a year now, and talked to him every once in a while and he just sent his heads in for this seasons freshening. Just doing a VJ, milling them and swapping on a new set of Nex Tek springs.

Anyhow... here is the basic combo:

It's a 4.07" bore 340, 4" SCAT 4340 crank, Eagle H beams, Ross off shelf Dome 4" crank pistons. So it's a very basic 416 shortblock with off the shelf parts. No trick ring pack, no Chevy rods, no race block no nothing.

It's right around 13.5:1 compression with a 63 CC chamber. This is a gasoline burning motor.

I don't remember what brand of oil pan is on it, but it is a regular old melling M72HV internal pump and an off the shelf style race pan. So it does'nt have a dry sump etc.

It does have a vacuum pump, Weber belt drive just for steady timing, Mezziere electric water pump, and is driving an alternator.

The cam is a very simple "base roller" design picked by Lazerri at ICH, it's a 279/279 .680"/.680" on a 108 LSA installed at 108. That cam is 197 @ .200", so it's fast but not ultra fast.

It has a INDY 360-3 intake that has been port matched and some plenum work.

Carb is a 1000 Race Demon.

Heads are INDY 360-2 Oval Ports Started life as their 230 CC CNC version. Went to a SB Ford head specialist in Michigan, he put 2.15/1.625 Ferrea's in them, did a VJ, opened up the intake throat for the bigger valve, and sand rolled the ports and chambers.

Using the INDY 440-1 Cast rockers (1.6's), off shelf 3/8" pushrods, no trick double tapers etc. The springs are actually K motions and checked out at anywhere between 220-245 on the seat, 630-660 open. They have two seasons on them.

And a set of 2" Heddman Hustlers....

That's it.... very basic shortblock, basic cam design, and a set of basically off the shelf heads and intake.

Car weighs between 3050-3060 with driver and fuel.

Best of high 5.80's 114 in the 1/8, 9.40's 142 1/4 mile.

Based on the Moroso speed calculator it's making around 670 HP at the flywheel. The dyno we use seems to correlate very closely to the Moroso calc, and so far the most powerfull 59* head motor on it has been a 360-2 CNC 230 416 making 630 on gasoline with a 258/262 roller and 650's on methanol. 9 sec W2 and W5 motor have made 6-0's So his #'s seem to be in line. I talk to alot of people every day about Small Block Mopar engine combos and what they run, and as far as I remember, this is in my eyes the most powerfull NA 59 degree head motor I have heard of. I have not even seen any methanol motors that have made more.

Anyhow, just thought I'd post about this combo, since I have now had the heads in my hands to see what they are like and have the cam card etc. I attached a pic of it.

I really like these -2 230 CNC heads. I think I'm going to buy out the shop's investment in the MP Engine contest motor I'm currently building after the contest is over and yank off the tiny chamber heads that will be on it and put a set of these 230's on it which will knock my compression back down into real world pump gas teritory and I may end up putting that motor in my soon to arrive new '70 SuperBee this Summer to drive. I just have to have a set of these -2's myself, and that motor will be too radical to actually drive on street alot with the contest heads on.

Anyhow.... Don't see 5.80 114 MPH 59 degree SB engine combos every day.

Wow! 670 hp is awsome for that combo! is he running a factory 340 block ryan? i'd think it has to be a 59* race block, but i had to ask.

On a side note, what for a superbee did you buy?

Ryan,is that Johnny Pennington's engine? If so it is very impressive,I speak with him every year at the Bristol Mopar show. His dart is super clean and very exciting to watch and he's a super nice guy to boot!

Yep it's Johnny's Dart, and yes very nice guy.

Aaron, I don't remember much about the rest of the combo, except he has a JPT 8" converter somewhere in the 5200 stall range, it is a 727 some local guy to him did (South Carolina), that does'nt have a ton of trick parts in it. I don't remember what gear, and it is not a "big tire" car. Here is a pic of it. Only reason I know some about the verter and trans is becasue he pulled the shortblock apart and found his thrust bearing was in bad shape on the backside so I was asking him about what was behind the motor.

Andy: It's a '70 Coronet 500, turning it into a SuperBee clone. Orange, white vinyl top and white C stripes. Driving to Michigan this Saturday to pick it up. Should have insurance, registration, plate and inspection done and driving it next week. Going to put my 410 Edelbrock motor in it for the time being, and drive it daily.

no the guy see him at bristol every summer at the mopar race and the car is bad A$$.last time i seen it it was a stock block 727 456 gears had 88s in it but the wheel stand was so high it rubbed the back bumper.cool car nothing fancy but it hauls.

Ryan, I'm sure that "superbee" will be a fun ride. I'll have to check it out when i come up to pick up my heads.

That's alot of stall for a 4" crank. The only 4" motor I've seen make peak TQ that high was my 428 W8 and that was with a sheetmetal intake and alot of cam duration and cyl head. It was peak TQ at 6000-6100 on gasoline.

This is dyno sheet of that 360-2 CNC 230 motor W5Dart66 built. This is more along lines of typical 4" crank, big head roller cam TQ curve. Peak TQ at 5100. And your motor is on methanol which makes even more low end TQ, so I think you may be skipping right over some of your broadest TQ area on your W5 motor with 6100 stall.

That is extremely impressive, for any combo, even if it was a much larger engine. I love it!

Ryan, another one that impressed me was that olive green small tire'd Dart at the Norwalk Classic 2 summers ago, small block, no nitrous, 9.40's through the exhaust. Did you see that car?

Oh yah! We saw that car. That was a W8 motor We tried to ask the guy who owned it several questions, but he had NO CLUE. LOL Neat car none the less.

Aaron, I have a 4.00 stroke crank in my Dart. I have a JW 8" 5100 converter. My car weighs over 3200 lbs w/me in it and cuts mid to low 1.4 60's on motor with a glide and 1.80 straight cut gears. 4.56 rear gears in a Dana 60. 12 to 1 408 with Indy 360-1 heads, Indy intake, crane solid flat tappet cam. Runs 6.50's @ 104 on motor. I run a 112 lobe separation and have the cam installed 2* advanced. I think your converter is way too big. I would get something that goes between 5000-5200. Just my

Yea he didn't want to come off with too much info when I talked to him either, must be top secret. He said he takes a whole lotta guy's money on the street with that car. Sounds sweet with the X-pipe and aero chamber mufflers.

Ryan, sounds like a cool motor. If you think that is the most that can be squeezed out of a 59 degree SB then I'll take your word for it. I'm not that familiar with the SB motors and their limitations.
I have hung around the local circle track race builder enough to know that his typical 415 SB Chevy motor goes out the door somewhere around 720 hp. Those are usually 14:1 CR, 260 roller, Chapman 18 degree heads, Dart block, Wilson intake, Jessel valvetrain, Braswell carb, etc motors. I'm sure the race block helps with the power and the circle track motors are dry sump of course.
I guess I was just assuming that even the 59 degree heads could be made to work as well as the Chevy 18 degree stuff but I suppose there just hasn't been as much R&D on them as the bowtie boys get.
In any case, cool motor and thanks for the info. The car looks sweet also.

yes I too would like to know of this new Bee but he won't log onto AIM .

Andy keep in mind those are his HP #'s, translated that comes out to like 750HP going by some of the numbers ppl throw out on this site . Just note the weight vs MPH and E/T... Not saying a Chevy can't beat it, but it may not be as much as you think...

BTW Ryan i'm assuming you mean traditional 59* motors, not ones with 59* blocks and 48* heads .

Still with those 59* 9's I wonder if that number couldn't be improved....

If you are stuggling to produce engines making 620+hp you need to call Bill Richardson or some of the other top notch guys to find out there secrets and stop pretending that you know everything. He can make 700+ ponies in his sleep.

yes I did, hence my post. I do NOT read most of the bs that flies around here.
In fact, I usually avoid these type of posts since there are a few on this board that believe anyone claiming more then 620hp is a liar.

FWIW, my old 422ci RIP made 741hp 635tq when first built.
Now it was hurt when I bought it, melted heads and wore out vsprings, and possibly had a cam swap before I got it which could have robbed some of that power. Regardless, it was still one of the fastest smallblocks on this board. 600hp will not push you 150mph in the 1/4, I don't care what calculator you use.
When I used to advertise "worlds fastest w5" most of you thought I was bragging, perhaps I was some. But what I really wanted was for others who had eclipsed my performance level to step up and post their combo's. Only 2 people in 8 months had claimed to go faster, I believe only one was credible. my

my little motor was often overlooked/disrespected yet sits up top on the fastest list.

i know of two stout ones

1st...59 degree,3.79 crank,brodix b1ba heads,no alky.2550 race weight,904 trans...70 cuda..its been 9.05 at 148.about 13.5 compression,and thats with a 775 race demon on it

2nd one
66 cuda..3.79 crank,indy heads,flying toilet,alky injected,3150 pounds..has been 9.59 at 139


69 Dart GTS A4 Silver All steel, flat factory hood, 3360race weight
418 BPE factory replacement headed stroker, 565 lift solid cam
Best so far, low 10.30’s 1/4
1.41 best 60 foot
6.56 at 104.17
