BB going together with a crank scraper and a windage tray stuffed in between the oil pan and the block. I'd appreciate suggestions on what approach to take as far as where to use pan gaskets vs sealant, brand of sealant that will stay oil-tight without requiring a jackhammer to disassemble, etc. Thanks - Brad

I used sealant between my block and crankscraper, gasket between crankscraper and oil pan. My windage tray was installed in the oil pan. I used Mopar RTV. Seals well and easily comes apart.

No leakes on several builds with these Magnum Automotive Group windage tray/ gaskets. Very little RTV required with the raised twin rubber beads that run on both sides of this part. How thick is your scraper and does it mount around the entire pan rail?

What type of pan? I've been using pans with thick billet rails lately and with those pans I do not use any sealant. Just a high quality gasket and clamp it tight. If you are using a stock type pan made from sheet metal then it gets a little more tricky. If you are using a Milodon pan or other aftermarket pan with a flat rail then you can use my pan rail reinforcements to stiffen up the rail.

Gasket choice depends on how stiff the mating surface is. The more rigid the mating surfaces are the easier it is for the gasket to seal things up.

Is your crank scraper on one side only or does it cover the complete bottom end like a windage tray does?
If one sided I cut up and use part of a oil pan gasket on the other side, I do silicone the scaper to the block first and then use another complete oil pan gasket over the scraper between the windage tray or oil pan depending on which oil pan I'm using up

Crank scraper covers the bottom of the block.

Windage tray also covers the bottom of the block and is a modified Milidon-type design.

Oil pan is Milodon's version of a Street Hemi pan. Oddly enough, they stamp the pan rails like an OEM pan, rather than using flat rails like their other pans.

FWIW, what I did before with only a windage tray was to "glue" the gaskets to both sides of the tray, then installed the tray & pan dry. This worked OK, but the additional layer of the crank scraper throws in a new variable...

I only run a standard MP windage tray with a cheap oil pan that has dimpled at the rail over the years. I never have leaks though and I attribute it mostly to:
1. use of PermaTex Aviation Gasket Maker. Only sealant I ever use anymore, and it has proven to be the best stuff on earth to me.
2. don't overtighten the assembly.
