Is this to keep the bearings/cap/rod square to the journal and arrive at a more precise torque value, and obviously less of a chance to distort the bearings?

When torquing the rod bolt it will twist the rod on the journal and possibly bind the bearing against the journal surface, damaging the bearing. It's more prevalent when con-rod side clearance is excessive or greater than factory specs which is common with aftermarket con-rods.

Just because you've built 100's of one family of engines, doesn't mean you know how to build them all....

Had a friend that had the local machine shop assemble his 440 short block. This was a shop that build engined engines for the local napa, and many local garages.
They never lined up the hole in the cam bearing that feeds the rockers.....
Guess how long that lasted...
Had another friend who had a 526 caddy stroker built by a shop that build race engines.
This shop has engines that power many cars, that have set records... all of which are Chevy engines....
They went to break the engine in on the dyno and get some HP numbers....
Engine kept popping and sputtering like there was a timing issue.
Turns out, you don't line up ther timing gears " dot to dot" on a big caddy... the builder did not know this, it was the first one he ever built...

Get the best machine shop you can find. If they are not backed up leave. Good machine work is not sexy or cheap but properly done can save you big time and you can find some power as well. Assume nothing. Assume nothing fits right or perfectly. There is a reason that most engine shops have loads of machine equipment and tools. If it comes in a box assume you will have to work on it regardless of who's name is on it. If building a stroker like you say grinding clearance is key area of concern. Be ready to mock it up SEVERAL times. Don't be afraid or to prideful to ask for help when needed. No shame in asking questions if you don't know something and do not assume that you will always get good advise. Ask several people if you can.
Get the best tools and measuring equipment you can find.

Funny you say this,
I have two intakes sitting next to my newly ported sb sidewinder heads but just today I was on ebay looking for options......

The holley street dominator single plane ports are so small there is no way to match them to the larger gasket without going through the casting on 3 sides.

The LD4B dual plane will take some extensive work that is outside of my expertise and abilities.

Hmmmmmm

Make sure the cam goes in the block before anything else.

If it does, degree cam with just the number 1 piston in the block. That came from Dram. I thought it was really smart
