I've discovered some neat tricks to that Chevelle, but yes, he must have done some tweaking while the flakes were falling.

It's a good competition drive now for sure. Drawing boards are going to be lit up this year.

I heard from some one that was there that Dave went the usual 9's (I guess in qualifying) but why higher low 10's on that run against the Chevelle?
Did Dave just want to save the effort for another day?

NHRA requires a full cage at 9.99 or 135 mph. Sooner or later the fast cars in this class are going to have to run the same safety stuff as everyone else. Just depends on how the particular track enforces it.

it's amazing these guys are going that fast, at those speeds, on those tires. has to be a hairy ride at 130+ on those 7 inch tires. really shocked there hasn't been a crash yet. thank god.

The tires are not a safety issue whatsoever. The stock tires are safer than slicks. If you get out of shape, they don't roll over and grab, so you can drive out of it.

Ratings are for sustained high speed driving. Drag cars are only going fast for a quarter mile. That is not long enough for heat to build up in the Tire. If you drove them a hundred fifty miles an hour for 20 or 30 minutes, you might have an issue. Tires fail from heat build-up, not from centrifical force at 140 miles an hour. Back in the 60s and 70s, guys drove 150 Plus on these tires down the street quite regularly. In 1976 a school friend of mine went 152 in his GTX with polyglas tires and got the ticket to prove it.


Fast racing is a grassroots amateur event. You will find the same typical safety equipment compliance and violations in fast cars as you do at any event made up of amateur racers. Some racers are by the book and safety conscious and do everything they can. Other racers are either oblivious to safety issues or will only do what the tracks enforce to save money or save weight. Does every car have an SFI approved clutch and flywheel? I doubt it. Is there more than 12 inches of rubber hose on some cars? Of course. Electric fuel pumps without a safety shut off? Probably. Are there cars running High elevens on a factory lap belt? Yes.
From what I have seen, most of the cars that have made it into the tens are legal or pretty close to it. There have only been a dozen or less passes in the nines, but obviously that is an issue that needs to be addressed by the owners. it would not surprise me if Dave comes back with a cage and a window net at some point.
