Worked for me after struggling with other solutions. Will not just push on, else would be flopping all over the place,,,this spring must maintain very tight grip on crush can hub.

Wear eye protection when either removing or replacing this spring,,,it can pop off with great velocity.

Take a pair of those small "pointy" vice grips.

Place the end of the ring opposite from the cancel end part way down onto hub where it goes.

Clamp tightly into this position with vice grips.

Then using a small hammer just tap with medium strikes around the ring toward the cancel end until ring is well started.

Remove vice grips and with a chisel or screw driver tap down around ring until in final resting place.

Of course we hope that you marked where cancel cam end should be located in relation to hub of can.

If off a bit, shove a chisel or screw driver in to hub hole and using another screw driver as a pry bar against cancel cam and using the 'hole" tool as a fulcrum, work cancel cam into proper position. You of course do this before forcing cancel ring to its final resting place.

All takes less than 5 minutes

When I started reading this I was thinking a good pair on inside snap ring pliers might work. The kind with the flat tangs like used in tranny work to take the snap rings off of the bearings. I don't have a picture handy but maybe someone else does.

I did try snap ring pliers. Would not do the job for 2 reasons.

1. This spring is extremely strong and would likely destroy a good snap ring tool.

2. I could not get my pliers to not slip off the ends of the spring as soon as I tightened them at all.

Perhaps there is a model of snap ring tool that might do the job,,,i only own a couple but decent pair.

The vice grip trick did work quite well,,,a little practice could be done in a minute or 2. Likely however a once in a lifetime need unless you are in the business.

The ones I am referring to is pretty stout, I'm familiar with the ring and I could see how it might not bite but I don't think I have the but to break the pliers if the tension were too strong. I'll try to get a picture of some later and post it.
