Okay, I have a couple questions for 69 charger. First, if you refer to my first post on the top of this page, was that too thin for a coat? Most of my coats have been about that thickness. Several members seem to think that putting 3 coats and then sanding is a better plan, whats your thoughts on this? I would think too much debris would be buried in the 3 coats, and a simple wetsand would not be sufficient in getting them out. Im currently following your process, and on my 6th coat as we speak. Tonight I wetsand, buff, and polish. Oh, and a question about the final wetsand, is it 1000 then 1500, 1000 through 1500, or 1000 or 1500? I was kinda confused on that.
Thanks a lot for the help, and I will be posting pictures shortly.

Sam

2 coats then a wetsand is better, if you do 3, then you end up having to wetsand alot of paint off to completely get rid of peel, and create more work for yourself, after 2 coats, just a quick wetsand is fine. final grit is 1000-1500, 1500 just meens more work but better results.

I am having a problem with paint residue that has dried after I wetsanded. If I use a damp cloth and work at it I can get it to come off- but it is a lot of work. I can scratch it off with my fingernail though. If I paint over it with fresh paint will the residue absorb the chemcials in the fresh paint and bond with it? I am a little worried that there might be problems with adhesion.

This thread should be renamed "the way of the roller", kinda like a martial arts course or something

Hey

THanks for your reply.

Just one question, im 4 hours into the drying of the 6th coat, and I can see some areas where I may have wentover 8 minutes after I painted an area, and I can see visible roller marks. Is this just wet paint? Will these come out with my final wetsand?

it's been mentioned many times, but have a bucket of water while wetsanding, and a cheap shammy, right after wetsanding an area, clean it while its still wet with the shammy, and rinse it often. you'll have no residue, and you should clean the paint after wetsanding with mineral spirits and a rag, followed with a tack cloth before the next coat. don't paint over the residue from wetsanding.

wetsand it out before your next coat, or it'll be more work later, don't work the paint too long.

Normally the bubbles will pop on their own if the paint is thin enough. Immediatly after my roller lays down paint I have like 1000 bubbles but within a few seconds they all pop. I haven't had to blow on any bubbles to make them pop. I think someone previously suggested to lightly roll over them with the weight of the roller and that should help.

Here is my bug. 3rd coat not sanded yet. I am very happy with the results. I am becoming good with the roller.
The paint has to be very thin and It is important to fix runs quickly with the roller full of paint. To avoid orange peel or if an area has to be retouched, the roller can be passed over the area again (even with fresh or tacky paint) but the roller has to be saturated with paint, completely soaked!. At least this works for me.

If painting outside, the metal has to be cool, it is not good to paint in the middle of the day under the sun.

What brand/type of polish are you guys using to get the deep gloss after the final wetsanding?
What polishing/buffing procedures are you using?
I don't seem to be getting the gloss I was expecting after polishing with Turtle Wax polish and a 6" orbital polisher/buffer.

Hello to all, new guy on your board here. Like so many others I got pointed to this thread off another message board (Grassroots Motorsports). When I first saw it the thread was at 17 pages and I spent a weekend reading it all and have been following it ever since. Looks like I'll be trying this on a 59 Sprite mid to late summer. In the mean time my wife has volunteered (without knowing) to test the method for me. She wants to paint our front metal door so I took her out yesterday to Home Depot for all the fixings. I plan to coach her through it and follow the progress to see how easy it really is. Thanks for what has to be the best thread on the web.

I can't believe I read the whooollleee thing! Really though, I think it took 4 or 5 hours but I did it all in one sitting.

Found this from a Jeep board, and to say I am inspired is understatement.

To reiterate others sentiments, thanks 69charger.

Also thanks Exit as I am in Calinazi land, and you had me worried about our paint. Thank you for your willingness to be thorough, test, retest, come back, try again. Thorough is a good word.

Have been wanting a nice paint job for my cherokee (xj), and did not think it would ever be reality due to price and the likelihood of transforming something into an adequate enough booth to have a buddy shoot it for me. BUT... now I know there will be a paint job that I can be very satisfied with, and it really appeals to the do-it-yourself mentality I hold in high regard.

I cannot start this process until June, but I will continue to monitor this post, and when I begin my own project I will post my results.

Thanks to everyone who has posted.

BTW used to have a '70 Dodge Dart Custom with the slant six. It was that nice pale yellow in color with black interior, with green cloth inserts on the seats. Someday I will have another Dart, someday...

Just wanted to say that this post must go down as the outright best post in Moparts history. I remeber reading this thing almost two months ago and to see people still replying to it is unbelievable. Cheers!
