I know many of you have dealt with this already, and I'm finally there. My Wife and I usually have a 10 year old Dakota, and another 10 year old front scratcher for dailies. Haven't had a car payment in over 12 years. Then we have the 1 ton, and the 67 Belvedere for back-ups.
My oldest daughter just killed her car, and she's been using our 99 Sebring. After 6 years and 75K I'm so tired of that car I want the daughter to just keep it.
So I start looking at LX stuff, first at reasonably priced ten year old cars, but then at nice performance based models. As fate would have it I found my dream car, in the right color, but even used it's expensive, and I'd have to sell the Belvedere and convince the wife I was replacing both our daily, and one of the hot rods to pull it off. I like having a healthy bit of scratch to throw at my toys and a car payment would cut into that.
Or I buy a 6k car and keep improving the 67 Belvedere.
What scares me is I see guys get a hard running LX, and then ALL their old stuff just sits after that! Put a 6.4 into a Dakota and use the new Plug and play from Mopar to run it! Kill two birds with one stone. 1998 to 2004 Dak use the "Engine Swap" mounts, headers and milodon pan. If its a 4.7 in the Dak it will have the 545rfe trans which all bolts together. And since your in Arizona I believe you dont have emission testing.

IMO, the 67 and a newer lx car are not interchangeable. I bought a mustang gt in 2012, but it's not a substitute or replacement for my 68 satellite.
For DD duties, I just consider those vehicles "appliances". All I need from it is darn near 100% reliability, good mileage, and to not "dislike" driving it. My current appliance of choice is a Honda civic....... I've had it just about 6 years, been a great little car thus far.
If your only choices are keep the 67 and buy an appliance for 6k, or sell the 67 to finance a srt8 300........ I'd opt for the appliance and keep the 67. But a big factor in your decision would be how attached you are to the 67 and how well you like it. The newer stuff just "seem" more like vehicles you don't get real attached to. Use em for a while and move on. The old school stuff kind of works itself into your lifestyle
I really like my mustang......... But if it went away, I wouldn't mind that much.

Good to finally meet you at the Mopar show. I feel your pain on driving a more moderate car. I've been toying with the idea of selling my GTS and buying a newer Challender or Charger. I'm kinda getting tired of handing over fenders and laying on my back. My body complains more and more these days.

Has a familiar feel, in some ways. I'm still driving my 2002 Subaru WRX (140K miles) and we replaced my wife's '97 Toyota Corolla (180K) with a new Subaru Legacy two years ago. We bought our 2007 Honda van when my wife was pregnant w/ our daughter, primarily w/ $ from the sale of my '69 A12 440 6BBL Road Runner, even though it's not usually a daily driver and only has about 40K on it. I... really... want... a... Dodge Challenger Scat Pack. And my wife (who really is NOT a b!tch, although this may come across that way in my semi-rant) pretty much said the only way I could buy one -- even used -- is if I sell my '73 Challenger street/strip car (which hasn't even been running since 2009) and my WRX. So, I'm still driving my 2002 WRX, which IS a fun car to drive, especially w/ the upgrades I've done to it over the years. And I'm still trying to put my Challenger back together. And that pristine 2015 Scat Pack with under 5K miles for #35K that happens to be in my wife's mom's neighborhood is not going to end up in my driveway, regardless of how much I want it, or how good of a deal it is. Can't help ya', sorry. And my apology for hijacking your thread for my own pity party.

My dilemma is no room for an additional car. GTS is in the shop/garage, the 65 300 is parked in front of our main garage and my 07 CTD is parked on the street in front of the garage. The Legacy is in the main garage. I too have looked at the Scatpacs and am very tempted. I just don't want to park it outside especially during our harsh (very hot)summer. Bottom line, I'm getting older and with all my ortho issues working on these old cars is not fun anymore.

What would your brothers say if you bought a V6 when you could have bought the SRT 6.4? Exactly. Though I only have a Charger RT with the 5.7 and I freaking love it. Of course I couldn't resist racing it and managed a 13.9 pass...bone stock on factory stock tires at 44 PSI. lol. And I still love my old Mopars too.

First, I've made it 52 years and raised three kids without ever owning or driving a mini van. However many more rotations around the sun God grants me, I hope to keep that streak intact. All I see is: "Mrs. MoparBilly for wife of the century" You'd have to "convince the wife" in order to sell ONE of the hot rods and buy a nice newer car??? I don't know why she puts up with me. The Strip/Street 62 Valiant isn't going anywhere, and I'd still have the Barnyard Viper gasser truck. For reasons only people on here would understand, that doesn't make getting rid of the Belvedere any easier. After 35 years of playing with cars, you would think I would know exactly what I want and where I'm going...I don't, and I think that's why I still love it so much. For me I like having a newer car that doesn't require a bunch of my time, but is fun to drive. The wife's current car is a 2010 Challenger R/T classic, before that was a SRT4.
I no longer let my drivers become my toys. For me it is like a Alcoholic having a drink
Very good advice, I think I could leave the SRT8 alone. I think If I bought an older 5.7 car...I couldn't. IMO, the 67 and a newer lx car are not interchangeable.
For DD duties, I just consider those vehicles "appliances". All I need from it is darn near 100% reliability, good mileage, and to not "dislike" driving it. The newer stuff just "seem" more like vehicles you don't get real attached to. Use em for a while and move on.

This. This strikes right to the heart of the matter. Where the 99 Sebring has failed me is I've really came to dislike driving it. My original plan was just to find A v8 300 to replace it. Then I found THE 300 of my dreams, and began to weigh my desire to own that over the 67 and another nice appliance. If you can get a used LX that isn't too ragged out - I'd go that route. We have a 2010 300C SRT8 with 40k miles in the garage. It's a nice car, we love it. Personally I think used 300's are some of the best values on the market. Now is a great time to buy lease turn ins as the dealers are having trouble selling 4dr sedans. Shop around and find the one you like you will not regret it. My dilemma is no room for an additional car.
I too have looked at the Scatpacs and am very tempted. I just don't want to park it outside especially during our harsh (very hot)summer.
This is what started me down this path, there are very good prices on used three hundreds right now. I've been close to buying one several times. Then this red SRT8 showed up, and I start wanting to reach. The lack of a garage is always my wife's main argument against buying something really nice and really expensive.

I tried to have an appliance DD, it just doesn't work for me. I spend way too much time in it to have something completely boring.
I am driving a 2015 GTI, my first new car, heck, my first car that was built after 96...luckily I am driving for work, so the payment is largely subsidized by my mileage reimbursement. It is not a rocketship, but should run low 14's and I've done a few trackdays at the local road course. My girlfriend makes fun of my "teenager's car", but it is fun to drive.
Part of me really likes the raw-ness of the old car, manual everything, no AC, no overdrive, mildly obnoxious.
But there is something to be said for similar performance with all the creature comforts. That SRT should run what the 67 runs on motor, then you drive home with the AC and cruise control.
That 67 is a nice ride though...

Billy the wife has a 2012 hemi 300. It has over 100000 miles and it is still very solid. Runs good. Averaging over 20 mpg

To me a DD is just that a DD. To me it needs to be something I enjoy driving that I need to only basic maintenance too. But my DD is a 2011 F450. My wife has been an MB fan for along time and has had a few. The LX platform cars are still basically the MB chassis that they started with, basically and E class Benz platform. Those are very reliable very good cars. We always seem to have some sort of modern muscle "fun car" for the wife as well. It has been a string of Mustangs until recently where her german car thing came back. Now the current fun car is a 911 Carrera S. I can tell you it is enjoyable to have a modern performance oriented car around. Just get in it and drive and enjoy. I have sold most all of my old stuff in favor of the more modern cars.
If it were me I would sell the Belvedere and buy the SRT8 and never look back. There are plenty more old B bodies out there and new projects are always fun. But Id be willing to bet you will be very happy with the new car to drive on a more daily basis vs the occasion use of the old B bosy. Not like you don't have other cars to go out and have fun cruising around and tinkering with when the urge hits.

You'll still have the Valiant, right? If the house will no longer house any 60's iron I don't think I would sell the '67 to buy an SRT8 300. If the Valiant is still around and easily accessible to go drag racing and cruising, it wouldn't hurt to add a modern performance car to the stable.

That's some good logic right there. It's fun to have a variety of different cars for different purposes. Fast, faster, and fastest!

I'm simply not going to drive a beater all the time, nor do you want to take your hot rod with no air on a weekend trip. While my everyday "driver" is a Ford Flex, it's owned by Holley. My own personal everyday cars are a Dodge diesel duallie and a Mercedes E550. My older cars at this point are toys and I have no desire to drive them daily
I did contemplate buying a new Challenger recently, but then decided to just spend "payment money" on modernizing my 73 Challenger, plus I have the Benz as my "nice" car already

I struggle with wanting modern muscle. I have my Barracuda and a Jeep. I would be fine with filling that modern muscle void with my wifes vehicle. She would have fun with an SRT charger or 300 but she thinks we really need an SUV. Perhaps I will win the lottery and buy her the SRT Durango when it comes out haha.
