I picked up a 340 freshly rebuilt with Edelbrock heads. I'm hoping to get some advice on head gasket thickness and brand.

340 .060 over
Speed Pro Flat Top forged pistons L2316F-60
Pistons are .032 out of the hole
Edelbrock 6077 Aluminum Heads (closed chamber believe)
Comp Cam 268HE(cam seems small to me, but it will be a street car)
Anything else I'm missing for recommendations?

take the postive deck height...+032 plus whatever head clearance you want...say .040....call Cometic and they will make a .072 gasket.

I would spend the money and go with cometic, with the .040 thick gasket

I just use the Felpro... dont remember if its
the 1008 or 1009(one of those is a BB gasket)
but measure the top of the tapper at the top
of the bores to make sure the gasket isnt hanging
into the bore at all... that will be a .039
compressed... but what do you want for compression..
I run the 1008(pretty sure thats the number) with a
+.030 piston and at 8000 rpm it JUST touched at one
small point on the head.. 3 seconds with a die grinder
on the heads and I put it back together.. that was on
a set of W-2s

I've never had a 10-1 motor so I'd like to at least stay in that range. The pistons with a 63cc head are advertised at 10.35-1.

My 416 street engine is 10.4:1... your cam is
what tells the story on compression... if the
piston is way up before the valve closes your
pressure will be low... on mine I can run 87
octane on the street with no problems but I
plan on running 93 octane when racing to be safe
and then slowly dial that down.. but I also have
.039 quench on it and 38* timing for max power but
I run 36* on the street... with 63cc chambers I think
your gonna need a thicker gasket to clear the head
EDIT
Mock it up with clay and a .039 gasket and see what
you have... give it some clearance for heat

Did ya read his description...got close chamber heads with a positive deck height of .032

and ya putting a .039 or .040 gasket on it..LOL

Sounds like I have some phone calls to make. I was planning on calling Hughes to see what they recommend for a cam and I'll call Cometic to see what they recommend for gasket thickness. I've never done the clay before so I'll get some and check it out. I'm assuming the head gasket you use when you're checking for clearance with clay is no good after you're done because you torque it down?

70AARcuda, looks like you've got some real good running small blocks.

I would shoot for .035-.040 CAREFUULLY MEASURED quench but play with one of the on line calculators (I like united machine for SCR only) to see what your SCR comes in at on paper before any purchases. As said with alum heads/iron block I would suggest cometics & if you ain't able to get the SCR where you want it you might need to go thicker & lose quench (quench is VG if you can get it in there). do your homework thoroughly. SCR/DCR/cam choice/octane. With a spot on long block then nothing is left on the table & the add on choices (carb/intake manifold/exhaust/tuning will only compliment your excellent planning.

I have head gaskets in the shop so I use one
to mock it up.. you can torque it for the
proper spec(and still use it on the build)

In my mind I swore he was building a 408ci... dont know
why I thought that.. I went back to look and no it doesnt
say that
EDIT
before he goes anywhere... get a sonic check
on the block... a lot of 340s wont do a .060
over and still have a nice wall

With the pistons out +.032 ...and a close chamber head that leaves .008 clearance between the piston and the head....

bang bang...

MR_P_BODY the motor is already built. It was built by Yo at Contemporary Auto Machine in Huntington Beach, California

70AARcuda I just wrapped my head around that, I get what you're saying now. I was thinking valve clearance and wasn't thinking top of the piston hitting the bottom of the head. Sounds like I need to find the happy medium there and should be a great combo.

The close chamber eddy heads were designed for engines where the piston has a negative deck height...there is an open chamber eddy head that can be used with the 60-71 340 engine that has the piston above the deck ....

either way...you need clearance from the top of the piston to the bottom of the head no matter which head you have.. usually .035 is the minimum .... but it is better to be safe with .040..
