I have quite a few of the part to build something very close to stock, but arguably, the act of rebuilding it negates it being stock, right? I'll take donations smile

I consider "dead stock" to be the same as "original"...... As in never apart.

IMO, only carb tuning and timing changes would be deviations I would consider acceptable.

As Russ states........ You aren't going to find many examples of that to reference.

My Dad bought a SS396/350hp Chevelle new in 68. 4.10's with a 4 speed.
It made many many trips to the drag strip....... But it only made one trip to the track where it was truly "stock"..... And that was the on the first weekend of ownership.

After a couple of weeks it had headers and different wheels and tires, and some carb tweaking....... And it always got slicks put on it at the track after that first outing.

Ive got a Dead stock 1/4 mile time. But, it doesn't fit to the OP,s original question either.

Its a 383 69 charger 2 barrel automatic. It ran 16.20 Changed the plugs and home ported the heads, it ran 15.72

The Porting had nothing to do with the ET gain, IMO. Only opened up the pinch and widened things. Never touched the bowls, didn't know about that then. Was only 16, realized it was the plugs. It had a dead cylinder. Dead stock, no headers no nothing. 16 year old kid having fun. smile

While not "dead stock" I was pretty happy with my junkyard combo in my 65 belvedere.
71 440 with stock bottom end, never apart, with factory low compression dished Pistons and 115,000 original miles. I've added a set of 915 closed chamber heads, comp 268 xe cam, eddy performer intake with edelbrock 750. Also added headers and electronic ignition.
Trans is freshened and stock with tf2 shift kit and stock converter. 8 3/4 with 3.23 sure grip rear.
Car has full interior, full exhaust and 26" drag radials. Went 8.35 @ 83 mph at my neighborhood 1/8 mile track.
I broke the 8 3/4 and added a Dana 60 with 3.54's, a Holley street dominator, tied the frame, drag shocks and a couple of other low budge bolt ons. Hoping to get to Fontana soon ( 1/4 mile track) and run some mid/high 12's. Fun car!

I was only 10, so i don't remember it myself, but he said it was like 15.50's........with tons of tire spin.
He said there really wasnt any attempt made at trying to "finesse" it off the line.

'68 Charger R/T 440 auto bought for $250 in 1977, towed home, rebuilt trans and radiator, cleaned carb, patched both lower quarters. Took it to the drag strip one time before I sold it, first two passes it vapor locked so bad the engine stalled. Wrapped the fuel line with a garden hose and duct tape, taped a rag around the fuel pump and soaked it down with water. Car spun real bad on F70-15's and ran 15.20. After a few more tries I eased it off the line and ran 14.40. It might have gone 14.20 with slicks, 13.90 with headers and converter. I sold it for $1000 and thought I made out like a bandit, bought a Fiat X1/9 for a driver and it spent more time in the driveway broke than it did on the road.

Here's a great HEMI vs. 440 test. Stock but slicks and gear swap.

On a side note, wonder who owns that HEMI vert today in the article?

Still cool stuff to read.

"My dad and My grandfather took delivery of their trucks on a Tuesday in May back in 78, my Dad had a Midnite express truck, and Grandfather had a Lil Red ,that Sunday they ran both trucks at the old McGuire air force base in Nj, The Midnite truck went a best of 14.41(don't remember Mph the Lil red went 14.60 @98."

the Midnite truck was a factory 440 truck. both trucks were untouched as delivered

I believe that car is the same one Car Craft Road tested in the fall of 67 from Detroit to LA. If so a friend of mine owns it. Gold, green interior, white top. Pilot car.

I think mine was awful darn close. It is a little hard to fined someone with proof positive evidence that a car was stock, and have et and mph records (verses memory) to go with that. Plus they would need to be members on here too.

The cars were "stock" 50 years ago, their production numbers wee not that large, and by 40 years ago, most of them were no longer stock. So, what are we left with? Taking peoples real experience and data for close to stock like cars, and attempting to extrapolate what they probably did 50 years ago stock.

I agree with you. I said it half tongue in cheek.. It's probably rare to find an unrebuilt/bone stock car that someone is willing to thrash on.
I think this is a cool thread.
