I have been thinking about going with something different than the usual orange engine paint and was wondering if anyone here has painted their engine black. If so, if you could please post a picture of it I would appreciate it.

no pics, but they don't look as dirty when they are black like oil :P

Black is the only color I have used for years.

The last 2 motors I've done are black and look great...MEAN.

The factory has painted them black for decades. Boring

My '65 is a Pro Street car and black fits well.

With aluminum heads, intake etc it looks good, but if it's all black then as mentioned, boring.

My boring is engine is all black. Black is beautiful and worry free. Like everything else the purpose of the build dictates choices.

Back in the old days it was thought black paint dissipated heat better.
I regularly painted oil and valve tins wrinkle black to increase surfave area/heat transfer capability.
I currently have one motor painted black and another with black tins, no pics.

I thought black absorbed heat & white reflected it... Am I turned around on that? Tillotson roofing (a local co) sprays industrial sheetmetal roofs white to reflect the heat

Black is good at radiating heat actually.. I had a friend years ago who worked at Alpine (the car audio company) and they did tests with different colors for amplifiers and black was the best at shedding heat (from the aluminum finned body) even if silver,white etc might have looked cooler to sell in cases, black worked the best.

Black intake manifold and cylinder block, chrome valve covers, and yellow accents on brakets, timing cover, and headers.

Flat or satin black is even better....

Black is a great color to paint engines if you aren't very good at assembling them without having them drool oil LOL. Point is, sometimes it's a PITA to find an oil leak on a black engine. At that point the leak dye is your best friend.

This ^ I have always done the Wedge/Hemi orange and it makes it a bit easier to find that leak. BUT if I had a car that was a color that clashed with orange then I would look.

In theory, if the heat is generated from within as is in an internal combustion engine, than black should shed the heat better by extracting the inner heat from itself with the help of an exterior black coating.
In opposite is a black roof lining attracting heat from the sun which in that case is an exterior heat source. That is why most roofs these days are painted either bright silver or white.
Nascar stock car engines have been painted black for ages probably for this theory actually being proven true.
