I will also start my ride in about 2 months I can't wait. Here's the professional can and the standard can. Just to be safe I think I'll go to lowes and buy 4-5 quarts just so I have it.  I know 69charger said he used under a gallon for his charger. i'm going to plan on screwing up a few times, so I would buy at least a gallons worth + a quart for an old mopar. jagd, you might want to wait a while to see if it hardens up for you, then if not consider putting 2 more coats like you said, after wetsanding with 800 or so.

I plan on mixing 4 quarts together in a gallon can just to make sure the color is the same. For the last test run, I've opened the rustoleum can ONCE - and poured it into a yogurt container with a nice lid, and mixed the mineral spirits in with it. I kept using that mixture over the past 5 days, just adding a bit of mineral spirits each time as it seems to thicken up a bit over a day.
if you haven't practiced (even if you have...), plan on screwing up a few times so get enough paint where you dont have to worry..

I'll see how it feels after a month or so and then maybe go back over it.
I am painting my car 2 different colors (red and white), I noticed that the red mixes VERY differently than the white with mineral spirits. It takes a lot more mineral spirits to thin it, and it tends to bubble more than the white for some reason.

Looks awesome, Exit! That came out very nice, even with the garage light. I was concerned with the Professional, because I thought that shine might not have been as high of a priority as durability. I'm going to pick some of that up and do the reverse side of my test panel. In retrospect with my unsuccessful test, my prep sucked (didn't get all of the oil off the surface from the mill), and I laid the coats way too thick. However, I can go back to my panel now (it's been about a month) and I can't put my fingernail through to the bare metal. I used red, and as Jag indicated, I think it requires a bit more mineral spirits than some of the other colors. I'll probably start rolling my dune buggy next month. Thanks for all of the insight and updates, guys...

I will agree with the first part of your observations. With the consumer grade paint, I found the Gloss White to be significantly thicker than the Gloss Sunrise Red right out of the can. However, when I got the dilution right, I saw no difference in how it applied.

Man, the paint job is going to be the easy (and cheap!) part. It has no drivetrain, but I have a '66 383/727 out of a Fury I'll be dumping in it.. hope to have it out of the garage under its own power this summer!

Now that I know this paint job works, I need to get Home Depot to blend me some sublime green to paint my Challenger with! What I really need is someone local who can do body work for me, I need some metal welded in, and that's something I can't do

great post! I have someone picking up some tremclad very soon for me. I wanna do a test of that and the proffesional rustolem to see side by side differences.
Is there a page online that shows all the available tremclad colors? All I see when I go to the website is a pic of the spay can.

I used Rustoleum spraybomb professional on the gas tank of the sig car. I did it about 10 years ago, and it's still holding up well. I live on a dirt road too, so you know rocks get thrown at it regularly. It gets harder than the regular rustoleum and is a whole lot less gummy/sticky.

hey guys, i dont wanna sound redundant but i too have been following this thread ever since it started and man o man am i excited to get started on my car. I just bought a cheap project car which definetly needs cosmetic help. Here's a pic. And i need some help. These people used this car as a parade car through art festivals and what not.The art work on the car seems to be with acrylic paint and is very thick. I'm trying to sand it down but is taking forever. I will be painting it with RUST-OLEUM that i got tinted from homedepot last night to a METROPOLITAN tint. What is the best method of sanding down this car to a somewhat smooth surface for rust-oleum to be smooth or will the end result be thick enough to smoothen out itself? Thanks for all the good info GUYs!!!

Personally - just frame the art and buy something else and start over!! Or.......remember the saying "If you can't fix it, feature it" and build your project around the art.
Curious, what kind of project are you doing - at first I thought it was a Fiesta, but is it a Civic?

I think it's a FestivaL...  It will take some work getting that surface level, but I'm sure it will come out nice with some elbow grease.

A rotary sander with some heavy grit (80?) may be more of your friend getting the paint off. I'm sure it will be more aggressive than the square one you speak of (I'm assuming a palm sander).
I'm no expert, but I have stripped a bit of paint before...
