according to the info in HOW TO MAKE HP, second edition, a 2 1/2 inch system will cost some power at 500 hp, a three inch will not, provided the mufflers flow enough cfm and there is a good x pipe. If you intend on getting the most blast per buck with good noise reduction that book is a great resource. Author is David Vizzard. On mufflers, it takes about 2.5 cfm flow for each hp you have to get to zero restriction/hp loss. For 500 hp that would be two 625 cfm mufflers or better.

I had Pypes Violator mufflers with a Pypes X-pipe on my Bee. I think they sounded way better than the Dynomax Super Turbos that came with the TTI exhaust I put on it afterwards.

I went with Dynomax super turbo full body muffs and a glaspack muff i front of the dynomax and electric dumps to reduce back pressure... I'm very picky on sound so thats why I added the glaspack to change the frequency.. the dynomax muffs arent cheap(about $90 each).. also its a 3" all the way to the bumper with the muffs right before the bumper.. NOTE.. the farther muffs are to the rear of the car the quieter they are.. reason is that the gases are cooler and take up less volume which is easier to control

I run 2 1/4 exhaust pipes off the headers into Ultra Flows and out the rear in my 69 Dart with a 416 with about 600hp. I had Flowmasters on before and I like the Ultras better for sound and flow. I unhooked the pipes from the headers at the track and gained .22, so! My suggestion would be to put at least a 3" system like gregsdart said with whatever muffler you choose and I think you will be happy. Me personally I dont have any insight on an X pipe but I have an H pipe on my Challenger and find it to be a pain in the rear whenever I have to work on anything under the car so any gain it might be making is not worth the pain IMO!!
416 stroker from Nick at Compu-flow. 11.14 in full street trim. Seems like a new best every time out. 11.06 open headers----so far!!

Here is what I run and love the sound, price and quality and it is a straight through muffler! They look exactly like my very expensive magnaflows on my other car, only the jones case is not polished. summit description: Jones Exhaust MAX Flow mufflers offer quality, strength, and a universal fit. MAX Flow mufflers are built from 409 stainless steel for a long service life. If you need a new muffler, consider the superior fit and function of Jones Exhaust MAX Flow mufflers. $45.97 https://www.summitracing.com/parts/jex-mf1259/overview/

Look at the Magna Flow 3.0 inch straight through, I have used them mounted behind the rear end with no pipes on them past and liked them a lot

Thats the reason I hate to get into muff posts.. everyone has a certain sound and a DB that they will put up with.. they are way different than me MOST of the time.. I hate straight thru muffs.. they dont kill enough noise(never will).. also the bigger the body the more noise cancellation.. just a fact.. then like I said.. the farther back the more the noise is cancelled.. 30+ years in the exhaust lab and listening to a ton of exhaust will give you ideas.. hell at one time I made my own muffs

Totally agree on the straight throughs. Looking to replace the straight through Borla's on my 33 cause they are just too loud. I've been looking at Jones mufflers. Think their #MF1225 is an oval 14" chambered design all stainless unit in a relatively compact package and not too pricey. Just haven't heard ( pardon the pun ) much about them. As always with my 33, I have room constraints.

When Pinks ran at my local track, they made a big deal out of not allowing straight through mufflers. At that time I had a 3.5 system,no H or X but they were long and round Ultra flows ending at the rear axel.So to run at pinks I had Jimi Vignogna fab a 4 inch stainless with an "X" going into 3.5 Hooker Aero chambers because they were advertised as a 3 chamber. When I pulled a muffler OOTB,,,,,,,,,,,
HEMI-ITIS has no cure. My condition is fully BLOWN!!
