Im going to try the fender of my car tomorrow, and what I wanted to ask was, when I do it, the stock paint (from 85) is still there, can I just remove the silicone and any other oils, sand, then paint over it?

sand the car down with 200, then really clean the car good with mineral spirits a few times. make sure you sand until there's no "shine" at all in the original paint. then sand with nothing finer then 400. paint right over the original paint.

ummmm, not sure when, i might just try a test peice, but i don't have a old hood hanging around. don't really feel like stripping my whole car again to add 10% more shine, but next time i need to paint it i'll defineatly try it out. interesting it says on the can to clean the surface with mineral spirits, then thin the clear with laquier thinner......interesting.... also it says to wait at least 72 hours if painting over the tremclad rust paint. it's worth a shot, espically then you'd only have to make the base color smooth and uniform, you could clear after wetsanding to a perfect finish and then buff and wetsand/polish the clear, also i opened the clear coat can up and it's allready as thin as i would like it to paint, so i don't even think i would thin the clear at all, but it looks nice in the can!!! maybe i'd thin it 2-5% just so it would increase the pot life/work time a bit...... ......the more i think about it, i really see potential for BC/CC quality, allthough it would'nt be a $50 paint job any more!!!, more like $70!!!!but the results would be . when i expiremented with it years ago i thinned with mineral spirits, and the tremclad dude said that will KILL the shine completely. i guess i should have read the can before using it.

The truck is only worth $3500 tops. The Challenger will get painted with top of the line PPG, but the Ram will get Rustoleum or Tremclad at this point.

but when you factor the paint, primer, primer sealer, and acetone, ect....i still needed to crack into a 2nd can of paint for the beetle. so in the end i spent about $60 x 2 gal of paint, $40 primer, $40 primer sealer, $40 reducers, for a total of $240 in paint. then you have to spray it, which was the main reason i rollered my car in the first place.

but the duplicolor paint was very good paint for the $, i've used it on 2 cars and it's good paint, but for those who don't want to spray, the roller method is the next best thing.

They do make the clear. So far I've tried home depot and lowes and they didnt have it except for the can. I am going to see if that kelly moore that carries rustoleum in my area has the clear in pint or quarts.

I may have lied.. I can't find non-spray CLEAR by rustoleum anywhere online, and what I understood about my kelly moore was wrong-they only have the industrial line (and no cheap clear coat of any kind).

Perhaps someone else in the USA makes a clear enamel (it's still an enamel right?) in a non-spray and that can be brushed or rolled on?

Funny thing, I can't find any website that sells tremclad either. Are there laws in canada against selling paint online or something?
