Bought a compression gauge and took a reading or two yesterday evening.

I took the readings with engine cold and just turning it over and not with engine running. With a deeply saddened heart I discovered that #3 only had 30psi. I tested #7 and it had 110psi. I have to assume #6 has low compression as well.

Now....moving forward. Did this eat up just rings or the cylinder wall too? The block is bored 060 and I need to know if I can just re-ring or what...?

Won't know until you take it apart. Why is it bored .060 over already? Was it bored twice to get to .060 over? I thought it was a original motor...I guess not.

I have done plenty off re hones and re rings without a bore job with good success.

Sorry to hear, more than likely both are worn. Squirt some oil in the spark plug hole and retest. If the numbers go up then it's saying the rings are worn. If not then the valve seal is bad.

It's not the original motor... but it is a 1969 HP motor that was in a '69 Road Runner. I rebuilt and put the motor in back in '89. It needed a 030 over bore then. Back in 2000 I rebuilt again and it needed 060.

The good thing is the 383's are somewhat cheap if you have to condemn your block.

Gotcha, sucks 30 is low miles.

I am betting with that low of miles you can rehone and re ring and it will be fine.

30 psi is way low I think you have a burned valve on that cylinder...

So like GTX MATT pointed out, if you squirt a good amount of oil in there and see no increase in cranking pressure, then it is the valves. Not too hard or expensive to do the top end and leave the short bock in the car. Fresh gaskets and a valve job and your back in business.

It's not smoking any or getting oil on the plug.... so would that eliminate the rings being gone?

Sadly it will have to be after the Holidays and the New Year before I can do anything about it. Plus an impending move in 2017.

One thing after another it seems sometimes....
