Exit1965, I have to say that it is really strange about the Acetone and mineral spirits thing. I have two cans of the professional here in my house. The flat black from just last fall and they both say to thin with Rustoleum thiner and cleaner or mineral spirts. And do not thin with gasoline, lacquer thinner, turpentine etc. I also read the label closer and there is a small block on the side labeled NJ and PA right to know. And guess what it says the professional line has in it-Alkyd Resin. While right on the front it says oil based so it appears that oil based can also be alkyd based and that our products are probably similar to the Tremclad. Anyway no pressure but we are awaiting your test panel with the professional line to see if there is a difference. Todd
Yes I should have some results by the weekend sometime.
I bought the quart of professional today at lowes, V7570 almond (a number I cannot find anywhere online..). It says thinning not needed for brush or roller, if sprayed, thin up to 15% with acetone.
This one doesn't say anything about alkyd resin that I can find, it does say that "the product contains chemicals known to the state of calfornia to cause cancer..". I am guessing various states have various legal things written on the paint cans, I do wonder if the mixtures are all the same. This can says Max VOC 450 g/l.
William - glad to read that this professional stuff is more durable in your experience. Who knows, if it comes out nice we may be packing this stuff up and sending it to our friends in Canada.
You sure it's not 7770 ??

to answer your question in a nutshell, NO, those S/S paints use primer, primer sealer, and topcoat color, and every stage requires using a reducer according to temperature and hudmidity conditions. you have to spray that stuff, it has a really small window to "flash" and needs to be sprayed. it would get really messy, really fast if you tried to roller it. you have to first prime with a compatable primer, then shoot the primer sealer, then within 10-30 mins depending on the reducer you use you have to shoot the color coat, either wait 10-30 mins, and if you miss the window something like 10 days. so the single stage paint process cannot be done this way, i have sprayed about 5 cars in total with single stage acrylic enamel with professional results in my garage. dust will be your worst enemy if you don't do it in a paint booth. some tips if your going to do it in your garage, wet the floor down before you paint, cover all your stuff in the garage you don't want over spray on, and i mean everything, make a blower system so that the room is positive pressure all the time, so air allways wants to go out of the garage and not in, also clean the surface alot with tack cloths. oh and wear a respirator, even with a high end charcol filtered resperator i was high like a kite, another reason to not do it. that's how i did it, hope that helps

This thread has apparently drawn many people over from other websites, so I don't see why it shouldn't be stickied as well- its definitely a hot topic..
Now back to paint talk.

Just how cold can it be to do this. The garage isnt heated but I want to do the kids truck.-Don
i painted the 1974 orange bug in my garage in january and it was about -20 celcus, really really damm cold. i had a electric 1500W heater and 2 1500W work lights, i was warm enough to work in a sweater, and the car came out perfect. just takes a bit longer to "cure" but the steps and times are the same.

Heres a pic form my test piece, a very rusty dash form a 1948 Dodge Coupe. It worked out well, I followed the directions spelled out by Charger on this website. This method may be for you if you can relate to the following, love to drive your car as much as possible, don't want to take anxiety medication or park you car 3 miles from your destination, cause your afraid some thing might scratch it. Or you just plain worried about driving it and ruining your paint. Lets face it most of us want driver cars not trailer show queens. This has been a great informative thread and we should give Charger the thumbs up for him sharing his experience with us. This paint is damn tough, I could not scrape the spill marks of the can after a few days, so I know its durable...........C38 Coupe

I'm still thinking that there may be a difference between the US Rustoleum and the Canadian Tremclad. C38coupe couldnt scrape his paint off after just a few days, but the US stuff was scraped off by a fingernail after a week of curing. What do you guys think?

It could be you need to use the industrial and not the professional. I'll be ordering the Dunes Tan in the industrial line and try the bed of my Rampage. I do plan on using their Heavy Duty Rust Inhibitive Primer as well. I do however want to wait for warmer weather, not so much for the paint as me. http://dragosupply.com/drago/servlet/CyberVendor/category/G4501296/catalog/group.jsp/

I have some of that paint running down my can too, and I can scratch it off. Granted, it's not easy and I do have a strong fingernail, but I can do it. That said, I did some more scratching last night and it seems I have to work a little harder to scratch it. Hopefully it will keep getting harder.
I'd like to try to scratch some freshly painted tremclad and see how it goes.

Hi All, when I tried to scrape it off the can it had alreay hardened pretty good, the paint on the rim of the can will propbably give me a hell of time to open this can in a few months. When I tried to scrape at the paint on the edge of my test site it was rock solid considering it has only been on a matter of days. Tonight I will try and scrape off some more and see what happens. As with any paint it will dry, then it requires some time period to fully cure and harden, this would depand on conditions it was applied, thinned, etc. The only other thing we could possibly do is ship a small can to you USA guys and let you try the Tremclad versus the Rustoleum, this could be an option. Because Rustoleum USA manufactures the Tremclad for the Canadian market and is not sold in the USA, the formulation to meet EPA laws and regulations may be different, but I doubt it. The paint is an Alkyd enamel and reduces with mineral spirits, which is oil based paint. Other paints with the same specs, may be the same and could very well be an alternative. NAPA Canada has an auotmotive paint division, called C-Max, they make a paint called Metal-pro paint,It can be reduced 10 %, can be used with there hardner to be sprayed, and I was told it is a Urethane paint, this could be interesting, sells in my locale in Canada for $44.00 canadian per gallon.Another thing about Tremclad paint is that it could have beena totally canadian product in the past and perhaps the US Rustoleum company took it over. I do believe once upon a time it was called Tremco's Tremclad paint, but I could be wrong. Lets not forget this product is dirt cheap as compared to automotive paints, in fact POR-15 rust paint is a hell of lot more money than this product, I wonder if it could give POR-15 a run for there money. Antoher product sold in the USA and not in Canada is Rust-Cap paint, I believe it comes in anumber of colors, it is referred to as the poormans POR-15, and sells for about $40.00 to $50.00 per gallon. Hope this helps some of you guys with your questions and ideas about this paint and method...C38coupe
