Top of piston marking = detonation, which also broke off the part of the piston which then bounced around making more dents.

The black marks on the side of the piston occurred during the failure and have been called "black death".

How long on that piston & rings?
Iron (boreable) or Nikasil bore?

Didn't burn a hole through the piston crown, but the heat sure toasted the ring land... and the skirt is just plain ugly.

This piston is from a single cylinder, air cooled, 4 stroke quad.
