I just swapped a 727 out and a A518 into my 74 truck and that is a Job. I won't ever tackle that trans again in my driveway with a floor jack. I think I strained evrything in my body including my hair. I couldn't believe the difference in weight. That 518 weighs 1/2 again as much as the 727. At least now when I pull the 2:94 sure grip and install 3:73 gears in it I'll still get decent milage driving to and from the races. Until then I'll be running a 2.02 gear in OD.

How much more than a 727 would you say? 50lbs? More?

the added weight of the 518 is the overdrive unit...

and it moves the center of balance on the trans backwards...

i can pick up a 727...but not a 518...

The worst wrestling match I've ever been in with a transmission was the 518 in our 92 B250 perversion van! The top was too high to get it inside on the concrete, and I had to do it in the driveway on a piece of plywood! That thing kicked my butt every way from Sunday. It wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't had to fool with it in such a primitive way.
