Original rads are for the ones who want/think to keep their cars "original" Champion rads are for the ones who don't care about original, want a good rad with a great guarantee and will spend the money saved on somthing else...my 2 cents. (and I don't sell or work for Champion, just have bought several over the years)

When I get my radiator back in, I plan to go 50/50 with the antifreeze. I have a feeling the radiator won't need much rodding out. It doesn't appear calciumed up in the areas that can be seen but you never know. I want to rule that out and the shop will be able to comment on how clean it is. I wonder if the 50/50 mix could make a 15 degree difference in the highway running and idle temps.

Griffin rads are great if you choose aluminum.
Their direct fit line drops in like stock and also has provisions to mount a stock shroud.

What are the boil over specs on 70/30, 50/50 and straight antifreeze?

Just trying to get the running temps down.

I was an Engineering Manager at a heat exchanger manufacturer for two years.

The only advantage of aluminum is cost and weight.

Copper / brass has better thermals, corrosion resistance and durability.

I would never put an aluminum radiator in anything that originally had a brass unit.

Morty, what about the myth (or truth?) that aluminum dissipates heat so much quicker and better than brass?
I also thought an aluminum rad was better, maybe not??

That's a myth. Per density the copper / brass unit will cool better however the margin is very small.

The only advantage of aluminum is cost and weight.

The big disadvantage is strength and durability. Aluminum has no real fatigue strength. As such it should never be used in a severe or industrial application. Also pure water will corrode it in no time.

The aluminum radiators in modern cars have isolation and expansion notches to quick fatigue to a minimum but eventually the tubes will crack and leak.

All great info.
Thank you very much Morty.
Thanks to the OP for posting this as I will need a rad for my Demon.

I just put a Champion in my 69 Charger today. CC375 to be exact, which is a 26", 3-row. I'll never run a copper/brass again. I live in Phoenix and were around 110 degrees right now. I had a 26" 4-row in it until last night, and a 26" 3-row before that, both copper/brass. I was skeptical before buying the Champion, but I gotta say, it bolted right in, no drilling or modification necessary, and even used my stock shroud. Got it from Jegs for $227 shipped to the door. I honestly think it looks way better than the stocker too. I took it on an 80mph run on the expressway today for a half hour, and it never even tried to go over 180*. I'm not running anything radical by any means. Just a six pack flat top 440, .500"-ish cam, 1 7/8" TTIs, and dual 2.5" exhaust. If you want to drive the car, beat on it, and enjoy it, go aftermarket. If you want to stare it in the garage, and put it up the Saturday cruise-in and talk "numbers" with a few guys that care, stay with the copper/brass and cross your fingers.

Very nice radiator and Charger B5XP29. So you replaced the original style radiator with this Champion? For comparison sake, was there anything wrong with the original style that wouldn't allow it to cool the car or was it perfectly fine and just wouldn't do the job?

My 2 cents...You are thinking far too hard on this issue. 50/50 has worked forever and is recommended by all the manufacturers. I've yet to see a pre-mix of 70/30 available

I would have to check with Champion and see if they have a 22" to fit this Barracuda. Jegs didn't appear to have one for my application thru Champion that would hold the shroud, and I would want that.

Doesn't appear that Champion makes a 22" BB radiator with the inlet/outlet on the LH side and shroud provisions for a 69 Barracuda. I may not need it. Supposed to get my stock radiator back tomorrow.

Got my radiator back from the shop and installed it last evening. Guy at the shop said about 20% of the tubes were plugged. He rodded all out so all good to go now. I'll stick with the stock 065. Also put in 50/50 antifreeze.

Results are basically no gains made in the attempt to get the temps down 15 degrees. Car still runs about 190-195 down the highway after warm up and 210-215 or so at idle.

I guess it's time to look at timing at this point. Any other possible ideas would be helpful. I have already verified with a laser and external mechanical gauge. Car has a new 180 thermostat in it and 16 lb cap. Doesn't boil over or even pee out the overflow after long term idling and turn off.

I'm also running 085 Autolite plugs. I do know as well that the operators manual for the car calls for a 190 thermostat so I suppose I could be making a big deal out of nothing though you would think with a 180 thermostat you could and should run 180.

1. Was the car always hot or just started to get hot?

2. Did you just acquired this car?

3. If not, what has the operating temps been before?

4. Did you do a pressure test of the system?

5. Water pump?

Seems you pretty much covered all of the bases on the cooling system

1. It has always ran that way. Guy I purchased it from had it the past 30 years. Motor was balanced and blue printed a few years before he bought it.

2. Acquired last October.

3. Temps have been as they are now since I've had it.

4. No but I have added a new cap and the system does appear to have plenty of pressure when you release the cap after warm up.

5. Pulled the pump just to check out but it is fairly new. No issues noted there.

My 69 Dart 383 always ran hot, but I like a lot of timing. If I backed down the timing it ran quite a bit cooler... work

Have you verified that it is not running lean?

I did put the timing back to TDC today and it did run a bit cooler I noticed. Took a bit away from launch but I wouldn't mind that in the hot Summer months.

I'm pretty sure it's not running lean. I've got an 800 Holley double pumper on it and all seems good.

I would like to play around with colder plugs. I don't believe J11Y's are gettable anymore but would like to run a colder range or two than the present Autolite 85's.
