I got it out today and its number 7 rod that let go. All the others are intact....Pulled the plugs and all are perfect. None are flattened. Not to mention I had the carb & timing almost perfect by the look of them. Been a while since I had such a good tune up on one of these, let alone with such a big carb.
I ran a 6.31 with a 1.35 60ft on the previous pass....Car was really running awesome. Until I starved it for oil somehow.
Radiator still had what looked like all the water still in it. So we will see what the block looks like later this week.
Still kicking myself for missing the warning signs. But I got all out of my routine. They rushed us bad at the track due to threat of rain, I could not find the guy I was supposed to line up against, and then an [censored] in a pickup ran me off the pit road on purpose when driving to the lanes looking for this guy.
When I parked the car after being run off the road, I was in gear, but didn't know it. Found the j-ass I was supposed to race, and he was first in line and never waited or looked for me. I am all the way in the back, and couldn't get it re-started as the line lock cord blocks your view of the gear. For the first time in 20 years I had added a neutral lock out and was working. The fan I put in the car last week quit, and I was fighting with that as well.
Finally I get it started, and I am already late to the line. I wish I had not run. But in true racer fashion, we try to over come, and I get what I got.
Sorry for the long drawn out story, but I feel a little better talking about it.
Weird how they all go on 7 or 8 cylinder. That's where my block was windowed. Usually when it gets faster there's more hp from something that was using hp that's not anymore. (Oil pump) stock racers will drain all the oil but one quart, to set the record, destroying the engine. Go figure.

I'm not a block expert, but that doesn't look terrible. A couple of window fixes and you'll be up and running again, sort of...

Unless it really tore it up internally, that block definitely looks fixable. Not bad at all really. Doesn't look like it got into water at all.

Terry Haddock. Don't recall business name Lone Star Aluminum Block Repair. Temple, TX.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

So sorry to read this Randy. I cant imagine the disappointment of it all. After i get an engine in i cant imagine yanking it all back out without at least *some* enjoyment. Any ideas as to the "Why" yet? Yup....Oil pan is too small at 10 quarts. Its always been marginal. I thought we were going to get the accumulator to work, but that didn't pan out either. So, if this is fixable, a new pan will be the key to making it live. Burned a few rod bearnings on Hemis before, and this is a classic case of not enough oil in the pan.

10 quart pan is no way too small........UNLESS you are trapping all the oil in the top of the motor Agree with Monte - Drag if ur running a 10 quart pan you have to be keeping oil up top for some reason ? I'm getting mine ready for a little action this summer and am running an 8.5quart pan with a swinging pickup so 'Ill be real interested in what happened with yours and why? Out of curiosity, what oil and type of pickup are you using?
