What was the hot chevy rod everyone was using years ago in the 471 strokers etc before they started making mopar width 2.2 big end rods?

the only mopar width 2.2 rods i was aware of were the manley sportsmaster rods and afaik they've been discontinued. there may be aluminum rods available but these were the only steel rods i know of. afaik now most aftermarket cranks with 2.2 throws are now ground with the chevy width. if you're ok with the extra side clearance you can use any chevy rods if the length fits your needs.

why even bother with a factory chevy rod? there's a slew of aftermarket rods available including the chevy width sportsmasters. there was a new set of 6.385 (i think) sportsmasters on ebag yesterday for $350. imho nice set of rods for that money

K1 makes a rod like that. There catalog is a litle confusing because they are listed under mopar BB but don't specify the width but does specify 2.2 crankpin and carries a different P/N then the chevy version.

Find them on page 7. Got mine from DRAM.

Ya I'm not talking about factory chevy junk, I'm referring to chevy dimensioned aftermarket rods...

I also wasn't asking about 2.2 width mopar rods... If the 2.2 mopar cranks are now ground to chevy width even better, what's the chevy rod everyones using with those cranks? What length, what part #'s etc?

a lot of people used to use an Eagle rod for that combo. can't remember which one though. i haven't used the rod in question in years now since there's more choices of parts for that combo.

A standard BBC rod is 6.135...only slightly longer than a 340 rod. Most aftermrkets are .6.385, 6.535 (very popular with 511 low decks) and 6.700's/6.800's which generally work best on 470's and were designed for the taller deck (~10.200 Vs 9.80) Merlin block BBC's (540's and 572's)

Thanks Wize, pretty much what I'm looking for here guys is a census, who's using chevy rods? Be it on a chevy width crank or a mopar width crank, what brand/length/part #? That's all I'm looking for...

K1's 7.0" chevy rod, chevy width and chevy .990 pin on a 4.5 stroke K1 crank.

The old Manley rod that you were referring to was a 14279-8 SPortsmaster rod, which as you know hasnt been made for about 6 or 7 years. I believe they were the only ones that made such a rod.It was the "answer" when there werent so many commercially available stroker set ups for Mopar.

As Wize says, typically you'll see 6.700 or 6.800 in the combos.

yes its also not incommon to use a Chevy rod width in a race motor withy Mopar journals. Runs just fine, but I wouldnt want to see it in a street combo as much. Its another topic that people will argue to death, and in the end, the run just fine, but as any experienced engone builder would agree, it wouldnt be your first choice if you had options.

HAZE, it would help you to get better information if you include where you are trying to head instead of being "evasive" with your intent. I am assuming its for school reserach, but if so, just say so and people can make a better recomendation etc.

Hope the info helps.

I'll ask another STUPID question since your question is so vaque that you have guys telling you what rods they are using on RB BUILDS whern you appear to be asking about a LOW DECK BUILD ...

what's the CH of the piston you are going to use ???

Here is what I have , and it ACTUALLY answers your question , I'll leave out the source of the rod since that is IRRELEVANT ...

3.895 crank , 1.320 CH piston works with a 6.700 rod , lots of side clearance but the prior build with this crank and 2.2 BBC big end width spec rods had no problem making over 700 HP

Now that James brought it up , Manley HAD a Sportsmater rod that was 6.765 long and had a 2.2 big end that was closer to mopar width , I'm pretty sure Andy F and 440Jim used that rod in their 470" builds .

The trick rod we all used years ago was a Manley rod which was Mopar width with a 2.200 rod journal size. That rod allowed us to build low cost stroker motors by offset grinding a factory crank. That rod is no longer available and not needed anymore since these days most crank mfgs make Mopar stroker cranks with Chevy pins.

I am running a Callies 4.250" crank with Chevy rod dimensions. The rods I am using in my low deck are Scat, 6.535", H-beam.

In my old 471 CID (3.915" x 4.375") low deck, I ran
Manley Sportsmaster I-beam rods, #14279, length 6.765, BB Chevy journal with Mopar width ~1.016", .990 pin
