I really got a lot of rust of an block with it that had been cleaned and machined but sat 4/5 years in a real damp garage. when I was done light hone with a spread hone and i used it. :-) took a few coats in some areas.

You can also try an oxalic acid bath. Rust will turn yellow and wipe off.
