I use that piston, but 4.360". It's holding up well. That being said I think I'm on borrowed time and worry about it when I go through the traps at 7000!

if your going to use that piston with iron heads the dome will have to be machined. the kb184 will yeild the same compression without piston machining.

that piston only has .140 dome and .075 in the hole and the other is .090 and .200 dome and maybe more V/P clearence.

the kb catalog states that the 278 will need the domes machined. i use 184's in both my 440's.

sorry, i'm not sure if your asking about my 184 piston set-up or if kb gives a spec for 278's. all kb stated quench clearances are .040. thats the mean dimension i've used on both my 440s with iron heads. one engine has .017 steel shims and the other has fel-pro 8519's, .039 thick. the 278 and 184 piston are the same, pin heigth, valve reliefs, with the exception of the quench dome heigth. the 184 when installed at .040 quench clearance has loads of valve relief and about 9.3:1 compression. the 278 installed at .040 quench clearance without machineing the dome will have a compression ratio close to 8.75:1 and a little more piston to valve relief.

the cam has .587 lift, duration is 268 @ .050 and I have in excess of .125" PV clearance.
